Meet the Ukrainian woman who fled Russia’s invasion for the Gaza Strip
> Ashraf al-Nimer said the Ukrainian community is the largest foreign community in the Gaza Strip. “Most of those have already experienced the four Israeli major attacks on the Strip and know the meaning and feeling of war. So they know what their families back in Ukraine are going through,” he told MEE. cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/104671

> “The language of environmental regulation is to set standards that reduce as much pollution as possible for the most people possible — it doesn’t really care, if pollution is reduced overall, that a small percentage of people will bear the brunt of that.” […] > > Residents are left to weigh the pros and cons of economic development in the area. Generally, that choice, between jobs and the negative health impacts of pollution, are what some environmental justice scholars refer to as “environmental blackmail.” [Unrestricted article: [Archive.today](https://archive.ph/xVPeL), [Internet Archive](https://web.archive.org/web/20220322033902/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2022-03-21/stellantis-nv-s-detroit-jeep-plant-draws-ire-of-environmental-justice-activists)] cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/82104

> Residente’s new music video [“This is Not America”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK87AKIPyZY) builds on and challenges Donald Glover’s (a.k.a. Childish Gambino) 2018 music video “This is America” […] Residente questions whether the story of the Americas is merely one of inescapable chaos and violence as depicted in Glover’s work, or whether the story of the Americas is one of resistance. cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/78002

> Virtual worlds are delicate things and they can vanish with hardly a trace. You can archive the software, but a dead world can only tell you so much. Accessibility: Difficult to determine if I have voted on certain comments, posts in default theme
I’ve set up my devices so they don’t display any colors, for [mental health](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/340421051_True_colors_Grayscale_setting_reduces_screen_time_in_college_students) reasons. Lemmy’s default theme performs well in black-and-white but it’s difficult to figure out if I already upvoted something. The arrows in the upvote and downvote buttons change shades after selecting them but the difference is practically imperceptible. I’m hoping that upvote and downvote buttons could be made more accessible to color-blind users. Here’s a very rough sketch of a possible solution where the whole button element changes color: ![Two Lemmy posts, where the upvoted post shows an arrow outlined in blue.](https://midwest.social/pictrs/image/bda6db6a-7e62-4bd7-8927-59b7d5da7c5f.png) I would deeply appreciate an improvement to this issue. Thanks for keeping Lemmy accessible.

> “For far too long, there has been an overemphasis placed on individuals’ behavior like smoking and allergies, and little attention to policies that grant permits to industry without regard for the exposure placed in an already overburdened community like Detroit,” [said Donele Wilkins, founder and CEO of advocacy group The Green Door Initiative]. cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/71578

Florida's controversial 'Don't Say Gay' bill passes Senate
cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/4823 > The proposal would require that instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity “may not occur” in kindergarten through third grade. For higher grades, the bill would prohibit such instruction if it is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate as determined by state academic standards. […] > > Other parts of the bill seek to prohibit schools from withholding information from parents about students’ mental or physical health and well-being. > > For example, the bill says school employees “may not discourage or prohibit parental notification of and involvement in critical decisions affecting a student's mental, emotional, or physical” health. […] > > [Governor Ron] DeSantis on Monday appeared to endorse the bill, telling reporters that lawmakers are trying to ensure that parents can “send their kid to kindergarten without having some of this stuff injected into their school curriculum.” […] > > If signed by DeSantis, the measure would go into effect in July.
