While I agree with this, many other messengers have payments and not having them could prevent people from switching. I would rather use Signal’s MobileCoin than whatever Facebook comes up with, mobile payments are HUGE in Asia and is probably coming to the US too.

Some chat apps like Element are working on chat with threads so it’s like a forum in a chat. There’s a proof-of-concept on develop.element.io https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/issues/2349
Element uses the Matrix protocol which is decentralized with federation (like Lemmy!). Revolt is a centralized service but it looks and functions more like Discord, and last time i checked they didn’t have native apps so iOS users can’t get notifications for messages.
Matrix is still a great project and is one of the only good and privacy-respecting Discord alternatives right now. GitHub has the Discussions tab, maybe Gitea and Sourcehut could do the same thing. GitLab probably already has it, that thing is so bloated.

TikTok is rotting kids brains and making people dumber with stupid and dangerous challenges like “devious licks”. And the algorithm keeps them addicted with a endless stream of garbage content.
The Chinese government has forced them to restrict how long the app can be used by kids and showing educational content. Other governments need to start doing the same thing.
If you need DDoS protection and you aren’t doing much egress bandwidth then all the major cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) are good and might save you money.
