Well, whew! As a result of Reddit’s recent spark of genius, the number of users looking for a new home has been growing at quite a brisk pace. In the last 12 hours, over 30 new membership applications were received. This has never happened before in Sopuli’s short history. It’s a bit like what happened to Mastodon when Twitter had its own spark of genius. I’m surprised and also excited.

Anyway, welcome to new users! Feel free to check out Sopuli and Lemmy in general. If you have any questions, you should first check FAQ if the question has already been answered. A list of communities, both on Sopuli and on other instances, is conveniently displayed in Communities and here. If you are planning to create a new community for a topic, you should check there to see if one has already been created and if the topic is fitting for it.

No huh huh! Redditin viimeaikaisten neronleimauksien seurauksena uutta kotia etsiviä käyttäjiä on tullut varsin reippaalla tahdilla. Viimeisen 12 tunnin aikana tuli yli 30 uutta käyttäjähakemusta. Tällaista ei ole Sopulin lyhyen historian aikana tapahtunut aiemmin. Tämä on vähän sama asia kuin mitä vuorostaan Mastodonille kävi Twitterin neronleimausten takia. Olen yllättynyt ja myös innostunut.

    Sopuli and other Lemmy servers like beehaw.org offer an alternative to link aggregation social media sites like Reddit (which is no doubt the reason for this influx of new users). All these servers communicate together, so it doesn’t actually matter which of them you register at as long as the rules and admins suit you. You can post to beehaw communities from Sopuli and vice versa.

    Why Sopuli/Lemmy instead of the other Reddit alternatives?

    With Lemmy, you can choose your administrator or choose to administrate yourself, and still be connected to the same overall network. An inherent benefit for this is that no one corporation, entity or person can own the network and you will not be under the whims of one corporate leadership.

      AFAIK there are some plans/considerations, at least for some of the 3rd apps, to migrate to/support Lemmy. so maybe in the near future you can have Boost for Lemmy - at least one can dream…

      although, I must say, Jerboa is a bit buggy in some parts and could use some mir features, but I think, it already has a very good and useable base

      I feel your pain- I’m still holding out hope for a Boost for Lemmy, but not sure that’s realistic any time soon. The r/boostforreddit sub was pushing for that but after the past few weeks I wouldnt blame the devs for taking a break.

    I’ve already looked into the Fediverse before but Mastodon didn’t suit me as a Twitter clone, I hate following people I want to follow topics.

    I look forward to dipping my toes and to seeing where this all goes.

    First time on a Lemmy instance, and I though Sopuli looked inviting. I appreciate you taking me, and some of my fellow supporters of the Reddit blackout, in during these dark days.     YesYes! I guess the finnish way suits me more than the beehive way. I have been on Lemmy for two days, following with much sleeplessness this playground – it’s like children unpacking the big christmas packet, with awe.

    I am another reddit refugee, I can’t see using it from my phone without redreader. Thanks for running an instance. I will have to see what communities there are on here that might fill what I used reddit for.

    Nice to see folks here. Just joined and have been slowly moving my social internet away from the corporate controlled interests. Mastodon has been a breath of fresh air and am optimistic that Lemmy will be too.

      I recently set up matrix for myself, as well. It’s especially nice once you bridge it whatsapp, telegram, discord, and whatever else you use. Finally the cluterfuck of modern instant messaging, in one place.
