what does this consist of? Well, it’s easy, whenever you install a new distribution of Linux, don’t customise anything, nothing please!! Out of the box experience, you may install software but that’s all. And if you are already using a customised distro, then delete the .config file and reboot, but please be careful and check your distribution wiki before doing that o.o
What’s the goal? This looks silly.
PAIN
This really defeats the purpose of using linux distros imo. The whole point was freedom of customisation and truely make it my own.
If I wanted a lock stock barrel experience I would just stick with Windows or macOS.
ok >w< I understand that and you are free to customise that a lot if you want to, it’s ok!! But I personally want to keep the brand and colors of the vanilla distro!!! It’s a cuter and more honest experience c:
I wonder how many thousands succeeded at this challenge without even knowing.
I feel like not much modification is really needed these days.
Debian, I use one Gnome extension but could easily do without it. All the defaults are fine if you just want to sit down and browse, edit media, create documents or write code.
I’m very confused about what OP considers customization. My only experience has been setting up my home server so far, so maybe I’ll be compelled to do more “customizing” when I make the switch on my PCs.
Does installing a GUI on Ubuntu Server already break that rule? Or is it a success because it’s only software? It’s definitely not “out of the box”.
What the hell is this challenge?
Am I allowed to add my printer? What about setting up my screen resolution? If I scale the fonts to match, that’s dangerously close to “customization”. Can I switch to dark theme?
I can install software, but what about shell extensions that are in my distro’s repository? That’s software, but also customization.all of that is yes!! You can change to dark mode only, you can set up resolution, what matters is keeping the distro brand wallpaper, colors, etc, intact!! It’s to keep it simple.
Oh, it’s you again.
Well then I’ve been doing your challenge on most of my systems for the past 15 years.
I mostly just install Debian with Gnome, the programs I need, and then get on with my life.Username checks out
pacstrap /mnt base linux
do you want me to use screen, mutt and lynx?
No, they’re not installed.
Once an admin I know forgot to install a text editor. Imagine the fun editing files with cat, grep, awk etc., now imagine you have to use it to browse the web.
echo “packstrap /mnt base linux…” | wc -w 68
:D
I swear, OP does not know what he is talking about and is posting for clout, just look at his post history.
I’m not doing that, I’m very sorry if it looks like that q.q I am not be posting for that!! I just want to be with Linux friends + show my modifications and ask questions!! n.n
Arch, and Plasma. That already gets me 90% there to my normal setup

How would that work on Arch Linux which literally doesn’t come with anything out of the box?
And how would I add accounts or any settings without touching dotfiles?
Not even changing the tty font…
I like challenges like just like any other person, but aren’t they supposed to be… fun, at least? Of If I wanted to do what you’re describing I’d just go back to Windows or Mac
I enjoy Linux so much that I think vanilla distros are a good experience, for example the main theme of Linux Mint is green, I wouldn’t feel ok with changing the color!! Or for example, Ubuntu is orange, well I will use the OS with orange colors.
The color is so superficial though

No, no, you have to delete your git config. That’s part of the challenge.
I’m also back on 60 Hz on my 160 Hz monitor because of this challenge. So cute though.

So… install a minimal distro image and the usual with the only caveat of being forced to type something that I want to run in the CLI instead of setting up hotkeys? Such challenge, much horror.
