Reddit event from July 2023, when Steve “Greedy Pigboy” Huffman decided to demand exorbitant amounts of money for API access, effectively killing most third party applications used to access the site from a phone, and neutering the leftover. It had a huge impact on Lemmy, for obvious reasons.

I believe that most people are here due to the APIcalypse, like you.

And… really, before that, this place was a ghost town. Then you had all that huge influx of newbies, so Lemmy became actually usable, albeit messy. Now things settled down and, although plenty users still behave like they were in Reddit, I feel like Lemmy already has its own culture.

I always think of the Koopa kid

          I usually think of this:
          Lemmings, a SNES game
Fucking Lemmings. I lost a good chunk of my childhood playing it. (I don’t regret it.)

RIP Apollo, one of the best pieces of software i’ve ever used that was made by one guy. So many features, dev listened to users, always quick to fix bugs, incredible pricing.

I don’t know what you’re using for Lemmy and have never used Apollo but I’m using Voyager and many people say it really feels like Apollo. P.S. I am using the web app but they also have native app options now

Not quite. When you’re given an ultimatum of “Stop using that good, fully functional app and use our one instead; it’s not completely functional but it does give us money or fuck off”, there isn’t much of a choice there. Those who don’t wish to knuckle under to scum (see: “tyrants”) forge a new path, it’s as simple as that.

I feel a bit silly in my reason for swapping when so many have such strong feelings. I’ve just hated spez for over a decade and the chance to jump ship to a foss social network populated with actual humans made me froth with excitement.

Nothing wrong with that. If you hate the face of a company for personal, political, philosophical, or whatever reasons, it’s perfectly acceptable to not want to use that companies product(s).
