LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - JCPS has canceled 47 bus routes for Monday, Nov. 6 after 85 bus drivers called out as of Sunday night, according to officials.
Take care of your workers!
Louder for the people in the back!
“Canceling bus routes is something other districts do frequently, but is not something JCPS does.”
Maybe that’s how they do things in Kentucky, but I’m fifty fucking years old and dealt with school systems in two states and I’ve never heard of such a thing. But I’m sure parents there will accept at face value that this happens everywhere all the time.
I’m not in Kentucky but I’ve delt with school bus routes getting cancelled at the last minute because of driver shortages
Super rural or something? I’m sure it happens on occasion, but I’ve never experienced it in all my schooling nor the schooling of five kids. This admin is saying it like it happens all the time.

Probably 85 as of last night, 143 is the number as of this morning
But why did they call out? Is that some kind of protest?
Looking into it, first, the district has 600 bus drivers. 87 sounds like most of them to me, but it isn’t.
Second, they do have a Union, but because they’re public sector, they aren’t allowed to strike, and the union isn’t involved.
But yes, it’s a protest about hours and about them being mistreated by the kids. Working conditions, essentially. The Union can’t legally support them, there’s other ways, but the Union morally supports them.
Federal employees can’t strike, but other state and local public sector unions absolutely can.
There was a big issue at the beginning of the school year in August, where a bunch of kids didn’t make it home until like 8 or 9pm. They had to delay the start of school because there weren’t enough drivers. I’m assuming conditions haven’t gotten much better since then.
Student behavior is a major factor in this one.
