Oh no, he fucked with rich people’s money. That was his first mistake. His second was getting so famous that his crimes came out into the open.

But famous is the thing he’s kinda always been in my memory. I remember him on the TV for various reasons all the way back to the 80s and 90s. He always seemed to be a total dickhead. Nobody even pretended to like him. When he started edging into politics it was like you’re kidding right? This guy? Turns out being the most full of shit is a recipe for success after all. The only surprise is just how bad he is, not that he is bad. No matter what he gets, he’ll really never get what he deserves.

Lol. A typical disclaimer on a financial statement only works between the CEO and the board or owners, so that the board/owner takes the responsibility of whatever the CEO was hired to do. It’s not possible to make a disclaimer that removes the responsibility for illegal things.

But that has never stopped businesses from trying…

I remember hearing about this fraud years and years ago, around the time he first began dabbling in politics during the Obama administration. It was supposedly widely known among people involved in New York local issues. Why did it take all this time to land a conviction?

Oh don’t worry. There are still years and years of appeals enough that Trump won’t feel the sting of this for the remainder of his natural life.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has ruled that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House.

Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling Tuesday in a civil lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, found that the former president and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing.

The decision, days before the start of a non-jury trial in Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit, is the strongest repudiation yet of Trump’s carefully coiffed image as a wealthy and shrewd real estate mogul turned political powerhouse.

Beyond mere bragging about his riches, Trump, his company and key executives repeatedly lied about them on his annual financial statements, reaping rewards such as favorable loan terms and lower insurance premiums, Engoron found.

Those tactics crossed a line and violated the law, the judge said, rejecting Trump’s contention that a disclaimer on the financial statements absolved him of any wrongdoing.

Manhattan prosecutors had looked into bringing a criminal case over the same conduct but declined to do so, leaving James to sue Trump and seek penalties that could disrupt his and his family’s ability to do business in the state.

There’s still a big difference between “everybody knows” and incarceration. Thankfully, in many cases. Let’s hope they get the paperwork and ceremony in order and justice will prevail.

Asked for comment from no one, I said the judge has "done a magnificent job for New York State” and “done his judging perfectly,” it is “A very happy day for the New York State System of Justice!”
