Rule 1: You are playing The Game.

You, along with everyone else in the world, always is, always has been, and always will be playing The Game. Neither awareness nor consent is required to play.

Rule 2: Every time you think about The Game, you lose.

Loss is temporary; as soon as you forget about The Game you stop losing. The objective of The Game is to forget that it exists. Good luck.

Rule 3: Loss of The Game must be announced.

Every time you think about The Game, and hence lose, you must say so. This is the only rule that can be broken, but do you really need to cheat…?

Congratulations, you are now playing The Game, and you just lost.

Slightly longer FAQ I dug up. Short answer: the game is the game.

The sole objective is to go for as long as possible without consciously thinking or talking about the game in any way. Once you realize you have, you’ve temporarily lost the game and have to start over. You must also announce your loss to others, forcing them to lose the game with much swearing.

Once you know about it, you’re automatically playing it. There is no way to stop.

The way I learned it, the event was the Pope having his hat knocked off, which happened within a few years of me hearing about The Game (and seemingly a few more times since).
Since then I have simply stayed winning according to my arbitrary ruleset.
