No, on lemmy you can’t subscribe to users at all. What activitypub call groups is what lemmy uses. A mastodon user can subscribe to a community on lemmy, because mastodon allows for subscribing/following groups, but the other way around, following users from lemmy that are on any other platform is not possible.
The Dev said that it would be a huge amount of work to implement this and it doesn’t even fit into the linkblog style thing that lemmy is. How would the content of said user be shown to you here? It would get even more confusing fast.
Post this to !artanddesign@lemmy.ml :)
Can I still post and comment in those communities while logged in through lemmy.ml?
Yes, exactly! You only need one account on one server and can use that server to follow and post everywhere!
you can follow the communities from the midwest server by just searching for them on lemmy.ml. You don’t need to log in (you can’t, actually), on midwest.social.
Think of it like e-mail. You have your account on lemmy.ml, but you can send e-mails to everyone on any server (in the context of reddit join and comment on any community).
Just search for the community in the search field and even communities that are on other servers than lemmy.ml will show up!!
you can search for !communityName@serverThatTheCommunityIsOn.domain and your server will look it up and you can join it. No need to have multiple accounts.
Edit: instead of the above you can also search for the link to a community on a foreign server to look it up, both works.
i.e. if you were on a server that didn’t yet know about https://beehaw.org/c/news, you could search for https://beehaw.org/c/news or !news@beehaw.org on a lemmy server so the lemmy server will recognize that community and list it, you’ll then be able to join it, participate, mod it (if you’re given the rights) etc.
The ethos of open source is that anyone can use the code to do whatever they want with it.
That’s why the code is public, for lemmy as well.
You know, there was a nazi lemmy server, a while ago. It just wasn’t connected to all but one or two very small other right-wing lemmy servers. Because everyone else blocked them.
Where do you read this, on lemmy or the website? https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/index.html
oh the one on beehaw already exists! It’s called !greenspace@beehaw.org
omg it’s the famous @ToastyWaffles@lemmy.ml !!
I think they’ll open one on beehaw tomorrow! !gardening@lemmy.ml and !gardening@mander.xyz already exist!
Nothing. This server existed, it was called wolfballs.com. lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, feddit.de and many others had this server blocked. So nothing was showing up from them.
Haha that’s another kind of rabbit-hole. Peertube would be cool, but in the end you can upload it anywhere, who really cares.
