  • You absolutely can predict things in quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is not just “everything is unknowable, throw up your hands and go home”. Quantum mechanics does deal with probabilities though.

If I’m playing roulette, and I bet on 36, I can predict that I will lose, but not with absolute certainty. I can also predict that if I bet on 36 ten thousand times in a row, I will win 270 times. It’s possible that I win 0 times, and it’s possible that I win 10,000 times, but it’s much more likely that I win about 270 times.

“Completely unpredictable” is not the same as “not knowable with absolute certainty.” There’s a big range in between those two absolutes where human beings thrive, doing science and making decisions based on things that can never be known with absolute certainty.

  • I haven’t seen anything to convince me that China is pushing “increasingly conservative” values. The situation for LGBT people is improving in China. It’s not great, but from what I’ve seen it’s definitely trending towards improvement. Compare to the USA (or UK) where LGBT rights on paper and access to care are better for the moment (if you can afford it), but being queer is becoming increasingly dangerous and what rights we do have are on the chopping block. I also haven’t heard of anyone in China getting murdered in the street just for being trans, a regular occurrence in the USA.

At least one of the LGBT centers that closed, which they cite as a sign of oppression, I remember looking into it and the leaders of it and the center itself all had ties to the usual suspects in USA color revolution attempts. So it’s worth noting that in some cases LGBT rights activism in China is a front for groups like the NED and CIA to sneak their imperialist tendrils into the country.

  • Same. I used to do glasses, and getting to have my peripheral vision in focus too is really nice, although I guess contacts would give you that too. I was also just fed up with worrying about keeping glasses on my face doing physical activity and sports. I was a little concerned about my night vision getting compromised since I’ve heard of people having trouble with that post-laser but 3 years on I haven’t noticed any differences yet.
