Newbie, recently joined, 7/1/23.
Right now, I’m on three: Lemmy.world (my ‘main’ or ‘home’), kbin, and Blahaj Lemmy. I’m looking at Reddthat and sh.itjust.works as well.
Just curious. I know most of the content will overlap, but there are differences in philosophy/moderator style, etc.
Do you like having ONE instance?
I’m loving Alexandrite as the Dove dark chocolate enrobing my lemmy.world ice cream bar!

My lemmynsfw only shows whack celebrity photos. What am I doing wrong?
Enabling NSFW is probably most of it, but I also blocked the user Madness (or something like that) who posts most of the celeb spam, and my feed has been 100% better.
Are you logged in? Most of the NSFW stuffs won’t show up if you’re not logged in and hasn’t enable NSFW in your account

What’s the benefit of a separate login? I guess maybe if you comment on NSFW posts then people don’t see it when they look at a comment you made on a normal post. Anything else?
If you spend most of your time at work scrolling then it can be useful to have everything NSFW on a separate feed

I think having Lenny and a kbin account is reasonable. If one goes down you can use the other.
Fair enough. Personally I’d probably just lurk until my instance was back up, but I could see it being worth having a backup.
i have a couple of accounts that i keep synced in case one of my instances disappears.

I’m happy with the one instance I’m on. The admin’s a nice guy and we agree well on policies.
I dunno, Max P. You may have a falling out with the admin at max-p.me. Better be careful.
Remember to get your admin a little treat every now and then to keep them happy.
One. I am a dumb dumb and don’t quite understand the point of being on multiple instances. Also so many of them are weirdly… ideological??
Mostly just to explore, and overtime it’ll become less important once the game of defederation-chicken cools down. The only other reason I see might be if a particular instance is blocked from Lemmy.world but you want to see the content still.
I’m happy where I am and don’t really feel the need to use any other ones.
having an account on a non crowded instance will give you better performance. less lag, less downtime, etc.
you can pick one that is near you for optimal latency.
Just the one (on lemmy.world). Any more would get confusing.
Might possibly get a porn one, but sooner or later I will end up posting a long, technical post on road safety or something similar as @pantycumslutboi or something similar… which could be interesting and amusing for other participatns in that discussion

Yes. Also you’ll likely have less lag.
I’m on 5 instances, primarily for redundancy just in case an instance experiences hiccups I could login to another.

I signed up on Sopuli.xyz and that’s it. I haven’t really had a need to sign up on another instance.
One is enough (lemmy.world) unless I need an alt for a specific instance
- lemm.ee for the first, then realized programming.dev existed. And, since I’m a programming dev, it made sense to sign up there. So, here I am.
discuss.online has been great. It’s small, fast and in the US where I live.
I’m also on lemmy.world but it’s slow with a lot of down time.

Three. I originally signed up on lemmy.world because it was the big one, made an account on lemmynsfw.com for… reasons, then learned that clustering on one instance is a bad idea and made an account, which is now my main, on Midwest.social

It’s real easy if you just ignore every modern meaning and conception of the Midwest and just use a 150+ year old definition of it. Also the Arch. The Arch! Missouri is definitely the Midwest.

Three. lemmy.ml, sh.itjust.works, and lemmynsfw
lemmy.ml because I was a relatively early adopter in the reddit migration. sh.itjust.works because they’re the largest instance I’m aware of that defederates the fewest other instances. If there were a large instance that didn’t defederate anyone, I’d definitely join.
sh.itjust.works is what I consider my “main” account currently, but unfortunately beehaw has the largest gaming community, so I have to keep a lemmy.ml tab open for it too. I use lemmy.ml on the living room computer so there isn’t porn on the tv all day.
Either way, it’s handy to have accounts on at least two different instances for when your main instance is down.
- Lemmy.one, for a broad normie experience. Kbin, idk I was trying it out but like lemmy better. Lemmygrad and hexbear.net because they’re not widely federated.
