Hasn’t this been known about for decades at this point that with less and less polar ice the ocean currents will be less and less effective? But as per usual when it comes to climate change, no one that could make an actual difference gave a shit, so now we’re seeing what scientists have warned about for decades. It fucking sucks having to be here, seeing all of this transpire, knowing that you’re helpless to stop it
We’re not helpless though. We each have a tiny bit of influence, and put our thumbs of the scale of what human decisions are.
It would take millions, if not billions of people to band together and make drastic changes for there to be any measurable difference. The largest offenders are all mega corporations that simply put quarterly profits over ensuring their impact on the planet is minimal. Without those corporations changing their business models permanently, no individuals lifestyle choices will ever matter more than a small fraction of a percentage point.
Amazingly, we already have social institutions to enable groups of millions to billions to change the rules of society. They’re called governments. Get control over one (ideally through an electoral process in countries where that’s available) and you can change policy.
Capitalism will go fascist before they let us take away their money making machine. What you’re talking about is revolutionary. Inshallah!
'Any signs of a slowing abyssal circulation could signal a fundamental shift in the equilibrium of the ocean and its role as a climate regulator, "
“Abyssal circulation ventilates deep basins with oxygen, and the weakening has already reduced the flow of oxygen and thinned well-ventilated deep layers. This change could affect marine life at depth as well as the capacity of the overturning circulation’s upper limb to return nutrients to the surface. “As the overturning slows down, the ocean will start to stagnate a bit,” Gunn explained.”
I got real optimistic in the middle of that sentence.
