Can’t say I’m surprised. Spez just wants to spin a narrative.

I really can’t take any of his complaints seriously now that they sunsetted one of the few things people were actually willing to pay them for.

ETA: I know he’s always been a liar, but the fact that he took the awards away just removed any shred of credibility he may have had left.

Can’t wait to watch a 1.5 hour “downfall of Reddit” YouTube drama Video 2-3 years from now.

Unfortunate and sad. I’m glad fediverse is a thing and getting traction now. It was hard for me to think how one can compete with the giants of the internet and it was evident that smaller organisations don’t stand a chance but thousands of people and small orgs hosting manageable instances that talk to each other is an amazing idea. I hope the fediverse becomes the mainstream way of experiencing the internet.

I was wondering how they were still up. Not surprised they were shut down unceremoniously.

The same will happen with Relay for Reddit soon too. DBrady is still holding open the app, paying the costs for it, so that he can release a subscription model. I love Relay, but I (and I imagine others) won’t pay a subscription for a stripped down version where majority of the $$$ goes to Reddit and not the developer… If he had an option to pay him directly I would consider it though.

I’m still using Relay because on its best day Kbin/lemmy still doesn’t have the content, but, when it stops working completely, I’m done with reddit.

Honestly, less content is better, in my case. 30 minutes and I’m done with all the memes and ready to go on with my life. It’s nice to live without hours of pointless doom scrolling for a change.

This is the exact the same as me - only still peruse Reddit because Relay is still kicking on, although I am 80 / 20 Lemmy to Reddit these days so I won’t miss anything when Relay is completely dead.

That site is dead. Infinity for reddit still works, and I’ve been seeing a whole bunch of new subs I’ve never heard of before. Subs I don’t care for at all. Only major ones I’m seeing still are askreddit with their stupid and useless fictional questions, mademesmile and two more or so.

RIP Joey. It was a great app, and a great dev. I hope the dev goes on to build another banger.

It really was such a great Reddit client. My brother swore by Apollo, but I was on android and couldn’t say enough good things about Joey. When I switch back to iOS, I got on Apollo and saw what he meant. But in my heart, I still think Joey was better. But they were both definitely cream of the crop

It’s a matter of absolute control, it’s not about the money that could be earned with a reasonable deal (which would be the smart play), it’s about displacing all third parties to annex control. Initially Spez tried to put a spin on it to make it look less hostile, but honestly it’s one of the most abusive things I’ve seen from a corporation, one for the history books. Now he’s doubling down by removing major Reddit features. It’s insane. What’s even more odd is Musk and Spez seem to be destructively operating in parallel. Honestly if you told me this would happen a year ago I would have thought impossible. Crazy times.

What I don’t get is that if they were honest up front most of us would’ve accepted it. It’s the being abusive part that got me to leave. All they had to do was put out a pr spin and use some fluffy language to thank the 3rd party devs but acknowledge reddit is changing amd they couldn’t even do that.

Yup, that’s mainly why I’m here. Joey made reddit tolerable, so without it I go elsewhere. Hell, I even fired up irssi today for the first time in at least a decade

still works fine if you use a older version of the app and are a moderator of a subreddit. apparently reddit didn’t killed the api key yet or the app somehow still works without api key.
