Rather the latter. Forced updates would potentially be low quality while increasing the price of devices. There are many devices from small brands which are very cheap and get no updates. For example, I think it was in 2016 when I got Lark Cumulus 5HD for €50. The specs were fairly good, and while it never got any updates, the OS wasn’t laggy at all. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it lag or freeze. So far the best
