It’s kind of a bummer because there is definitely a great idea for a show here. The casting was great outside of The Weeknd (I thought Lily Depp was surprisingly good! Looking forward to her in Nosferatu now. ). They should have focused more on the record company and managers with Hank Azaria and co. The tone and cinematography was really good as well. I even enjoyed the OST but that comes down to personal preference.

The first two episodes showed some promise such as the initial scene with the photoshoot/rehearsal and episode 2 with the music video.

But oh boy the whole cult stuff was extremely cringeworthy. The dialogue from The Weeknd was awful and his acting was mediocre. The fact that this was 90% of the show was disappointing.

They never explored the management side again and I expect the cut episode was going to focus on them and their actions (that leads to the end result of the show). Sad to see such a great idea butchered.

I <3 the Weeknd’s music but man, as soon as he appeared in the trailer I just got this vibe that this whole thing was going to suck big fat donkey balls. What @freamon@feddit.nl said is on point, it’s rare for HBO to eff up so badly.

Yess exactly. Have been a huge fan of him so I continued watching it for the music but giving him the lead role was a big mistake .

Not bad, worked well with the show. Standalone If you’re not gonna watch it I’d recommend

            • Family
            • Dollhouse
            • Fill the void
            • My Sweet lord cover by Troye Sivan (who also surprised me with his acting)

Everyone’s having lots of fun dunking of The Idol - Andy Greenwald from The Watch podcast said the finale was the worst hour of TV he’d ever seen. It’s rare for HBO to produce a complete stinker. I don’t know if I even want to hate-watch it.

The opening scene of the show was fantastic. It was fun the characters were interesting, and had very high hopes. Everything after that scene just fell completely flat. Gave up halfway through episode 2 because it was just boring and all the characters they chose to focus on were uninteresting and 1 dimensional. Sounds like I made the right choice.

Yeah, it tried to hard to be edgy, failed, which only made it cringe. The main characters were the least interesting. Abel is not a good actor. Cinematography is pretty good though.

I’d never hate-watched a show before–and tbh I had a blast. So awful that I tuned in every week just to see if they could keep it up (or, down in this case).

concludes as one of the worst shows ever made

Holy shit, that’s harsh. I mean, I’m sure I would hate at least one of this gal’s top 10 favorite shows.

I thought it was entertaining, and the music was fantastic - way better than what most shows could ever dream of putting out.

As for the worst show ever made, hell, I could probably name a dozen from Netflix that were too bad to continue watching, and several have multiple seasons!

I’d be totally up for a season 2, even if just for more music :)
