It’s not a bug. It was a feature. So, there is no fix, there is a change.

Can’t wait for the user base to not realize this, make an account, dislike and delete it and nuke their insta in the process

Maybe they were testing the waters first. Now that there is backlash, it was a “bug”.

it’s the same account. I don’t really understand the backlash, it’s like saying you can’t delete your gmail account without deleting your google drive account

I think a big difference is that an unused Google Drive it has no impact on you, so most people don’t have a good reason to want to close it. Whereas people open and close social media accounts all the time (for personal and social reasons alike).

Also, afaik you can create Threads profiles without Instagram, so conceptually they are separare from the start. You are effectively penalizing Instagram users.

I think you can deactivate your Threads profile, at which point it wouldn’t really have an impact on you (I’m not sure, I don’t actually use Threads or Instagram). And they’re very clearly branding Threads as “an Instagram app”, so the fact that it uses an Instagram account isn’t too surprising. Having two separate accounts could work too, but at the moment it doesn’t really seem unexpected or detrimental that they’re the same account.

Wait, there’s an easy way for me to delete my Instagram account? Usually it’s a pain in the ass

Opposite problem for me. I had a perfectly legitimate Instagram account that I used fairly infrequently to post pictures of artistic landscapes I saw in my daily life going back to like 2013. A few months ago, I tried to go on Instagram to be told that my Instagram had been deleted for “suspicious activity”. There was an appeals process where they had me take a picture of myself holding a code they gave me, so I did, but they never got back to me and my account was completely gone like a day later. Apparently they don’t have any fucking support staff, so there was absolutely no way for me to fight this. Their entire support team is automated. So yeah, years of special memories I had thrown down the drain. Fuck Meta. I refuse to store my memories on any of their bullshit platforms anymore since apparently they can just be deleted willy nilly like that. My IG account was even attached to my FB account, so I have no idea why the fuck they would just delete one account like that.

Threads wasn’t done. Clearly open beta farming algorithms. If it had a follower/followed tab in chronological order it would actually be a really good app.

They also clearly intended for activitypub to be a big part of the experience but also straight up said that they couldn’t get it done in time. Its a rush job.

Well they rushed it out because of Twitter. It was a smart move. It’s clearly still in beta though. I think with just a followed/follower tab could make threads actually pretty enjoyable experience. Like a Reddit instagram Twitter all mixed into one. I’m usually a massive meta hater… but I enjoy threads.

I also would prefer Lemmy to be the lone survivor of this social media war. Cause Lemmy is awesome.
