I only know the basics of Spanish but want to visit Santiago. Would Chileans understand the gist of what I’m saying? Do many speak English in Santiago?

People 35 or younger is more probably to know English, but not guarantee. If you know basic Spanish, people will understand you, so you won’t have too much problems.

And with Google Translate, you really don’t need to know too much.

I’d be more worried of not being able to understand them back, since we tend to speak fast and we skip consonants (think Australian). But if you ask them to speak slowly I am sure you will be just fine
