Its as the title says. I am a complete beginner to this stuff. I’ve previously set up Paper servers in windows but windows has lots of annoying problems and I decided I had enough of them.

What I’m using for this is an older gaming PC I no longer have a use for and as of writing this post I’m going to wipe it and install the latest version of Ubuntu.

So with that said, I am wondering what is the best way I could set up a server on linux (it could be a different distro if that is better than Ubuntu).

I’d ideally like a way to have it auto backup, run plugins auto restart, and ppossibly even a way to remote access the server.

If there is any more info about my setup I need to provide feel free to ask.

If you want minimal hassle, quick to set-up, then I have to recommend a docker container that takes care of all the hassle, then writing a low effort CRON job to perform backups.

There are lots of docker containers that support paper servers, can be automatically started with docker-compose and a startup script, and are low hassle for maintaining.
