Edit: I have to commute 1,5 hours oneway to get to work. HomeOffice is allowed 2 times a week. So I am leaving when my son is still in bed and come back when he is in bed again. Thing is, the money is good and the job is kind of a dream job for me.

Edit2: Wow! Thank you for your comments. These are exactly the thoughts Inhad in my mind, but couldn’t point my fingers on them. Unfortunately there is no way to get more days wfh, because high management says so. So i came to the descision to either ask for part time or get the new job asap

    Start looking and keep your options open. I worked a decent job with excellent pay but long hours and a similar commute. There was no work from home option as my skill set is always in demand and almost all hands on. The additional time it was taking from my life and family wasn’t worth it despite my take home pay being really nice. It took me about 20 months once I decided to leave but I found and landed a gig that is only 5 miles away, pay 35% higher with much better benefits and much lower chance of a visit from the layoff monster. The best part is I only work 14 days a month now.

    The point is once I decided to leave I started looking while I was still in the “I want another gig” mode, not in the “I need another gig ASAP” mode. That makes a huge difference on your negotiating position and puts you in charge of the interview process.

    Now for a fatherly related example. I was in the Navy when my children were born. I spent a majority of their first years from birth to age 8 deployed multiple times for anywhere from 6 to 9 months. In 1994 I was at sea 274 days, I DON’T GET ANY OF THAT BACK!
