Funny, the Wikipedia article for WikiTribune implies that it’s defunct.
Yeah, WikiTribune was originally a for-profit project unrelated to Wikipedia from a few years back. IIRC the idea was basically to avoid the issues with fake news by having users hire journalists directly… through the medium of the WikiTribune leadership… which is basically what Newspapers were. Not a bad idea I suppose, but it definitely flopped. Now I guess they’re reusing the name for a seemingly unrelated microblogging service. Weird.
Maybe the wikipedia devs are mad Jimmy isn’t shilling for more donations with all his time. lol
Here’s the ‘WT Social’ Article looks like they reused the name.
That’s cool. Not all that interesting to me, personally, but I’m glad they’re aiming for ActivityPub in the future.
honestly the coolest part about this whole fediverse thing to me is interacting with content across communities and platforms through one account. I’m all for different platforms and communities spinning up so long as it’s easy for me to find and interact with them
Yep, I think it’s part of the beauty of the federation, which at least in part stems from free software, open protocols and platforms not run for profit. Nobody has a target of getting as many users as possible, nor to fence them in a specific platform with the current system of incentives. As long as platforms are interoperable, I am happy if more will come up.
To some degree yes it’s very exciting, in others I think it is complex enough that it is going to have a lot of problems on its own. The most glaring one being that non-technical people’s eyes glaze over when I can’t explain it in a sentence or two. “It’s like having 1000 reddits that all link into one big one” doesn’t elicit a positive response, either lol
You can say it is like e-mail. You don’t need gmail to send an email to a gmail account.
Reddit is like whatsapp where everyone needs to be on the platform to communicate with eachother.
The thing that pisses me off about that thought process is either:
- They can’t understand the concepts of there being multiple gas station brands that all get you fuel for your car
or
- They want to complain but not change anything or go to a competitor.
In option 1 - I honestly fear for the idiocracy future.
In option 2, they need a therapist, not to waste my time. Oh, and they’re actively making my life more difficult because they see a problem but won’t take any steps to improve it. But for any mass action task, it’s more effective and quicker to change if there’s … you know … mass action. So they’re doubly annoying me.
For new users, no need to explain in too much detail. Just get them onto a big instance (lemmy.world is probably the best now) and after they start, they can learn more about instance.
This is great to begin with, but eventually it would be absolutely fantastic to have some sort of a map of the entire space, to the extent that that’s possible. As a new user, it’s taken me some time to start to understand where all the people are, what communities can talk to what, etc. Looking forward to learning though.

Hah, it also caught me off guard that they’re reusing the name wikitrubune, I signed up for the old one and found it to be really boring. It’s interesting that he’s planning to add activitypub support to this attempt, though I’ll only be interested when it’s not a “in the far future” plan and instead right around the corner.
