daddy
nah cmon get some more sleep, trust me you’re gonna constantly feel like shit otherwise
insomnia
just get more sleep
thanks, I’m cured (:
but I read that as genuine concern, as you didn’t know why I didn’t sleep much.
Trying to get more sleep today, but either people keep me from sleeping (being loud outside, being my boss and thinking I need to work) or my organism decides to pump out cortisol or adrenaline and that keeps me awake.
Oh damn I’m sorry to hear about that, hoping things get better for you
idk if this helps but when there’s too much noise outside or too much stress inside I like to put on the radio quietly to drown it out, there’s something about being tuned into static-laden local broadcasts that makes me feel less lonely and more connected, not caught in the crazy buzz of the global internet but also not wallowing away by myself. It’s very comforting for me.
I do something like this, but instead listen to recordings of the animals from where I grew up. (Frogs chirping, rain in forest, and Barn Owl calls. Really relaxes me.) Also, I have found that if I watch a bunch of something that will make me laugh before laying down it helps. (Stand-up, comedy panel shows, Try Not to Laugh videos, etc.)

That’s actually how the ingame music and ambience of Death Stranding made me feel! I know what you mean :)
The radio is a good idea but I end up being interested by what’s played or said in the radio and want to stay awake. I sometimes use white noise which works better for me, but is also pretty exhausting physically.
Having foam earplugs also really helps against the noise. Doesn’t help when it’s super warm and you wake up from that or when they fall out though, lol.
And my inner clock seems to have been set to 6:50 am because that’s when I need to get up to go to work. If I’d sleep much longer on weekends, I would feel bad throughout the week because then my inner clock would be set to 9am but I still needed to get up at 7.
It will get better, I’m sure. Didn’t want to make such a huge fuzz about it, just needed to satisfy the sidebar rule :D
For the adrenaline aspects… I had insomnia for years from anxiety+ issues. I know it might sound silly, but doing breathing exercises helped me calm my heart rate down to have a better chance to fall asleep.
I do a version of the 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise at this site: https://www.verywellmind.com/abdominal-breathing-2584115 (I do more of a 4-5-5 and don’t bother with tongue placement. Just alternating nose/mouth breathing and holding breath in between.) It was recommended to me by a therapist and it helped my issues. I haven’t tried the other exercises on there though.
I tried 4-7-8, 4-4-4 and everything in between. For me it’s mostly being aggravated, not having anxiety. I sometimes get bursts of inexplicable hatred which make my heart go brrrrt and my blood pressure go up so high my ears ring.
average lemming’s sleep schedule
I’m in the same boat. A traumatic event happened to my husband and it’s got me so shaken up that I wake up at odd hours of the night with my heart pumping.
sorry to hear that. Hope your husband is OK and you will be OK soon. XOXO
How do I fix?
good lord, you win.
How do I fix?
There are a few sleep hygiene rules.
Seeing your stats, I’d start with always getting up at the same time. Going to bed at the same time is harder, when you always get up at the same time your body might feel sleepy in the evening.
Some other ideas:
- Try to reduce light in the evening and use screen filter like Redshift or the one included in KDE or Windows.
- Try to go outside more, preferrably directly after you stood up in the morning.
- Reduce the temperature of your sleeping room
- Use a weighted blanket
- if you don’t have the money for one, you can simply put any weights on your blankets so you move less and feel the pressure
- drink less alcohol and sweetened drinks
- consume less carbohydrates and more protein
- drink more water throughout the day, at least approx. 0.4L/10kg body weight (so for a 75kg person, drink at least 3L)
I will try to keep your tips in mind. Drinking more and going more outside is definitely something I should do. Also maybe I will install curtains to make my room darker. The weird thing is I don’t really feel tired not sure if I trust the stats from my phone but the screen on time seems pretty convincing that something is wrong. I almost drink zero alcohol and I eat healthy. Maybe I need to take melatonin spray again it really helped me in the past.

another tip: try to use your bed only for sleep, not for scrolling through the Fediverse or just chilling.
The more you do apart from sleeping in your bed, the more your brain connects its synapses with the fact that the bed is not meant for sleeping.
So the other way around, if the only thing you do in bed is sleep, your brain connects bed = sleep and you’ll fall asleep way easier.
Drinking more […] is definitely something I should do.
It’s easier to drink more when you always have a full glass or bottle of water near you. If you’re like me, get multiple and scatter them around the house in every room you stay in so you don’t have the excuse that you have to walk far to drink something. If you see an empty bottle, fill it.

If it’s nearly time to go to bed and you didn’t go outside, just take a walk around the block. This will take <10min in many cases and nearly no effort and you will normalise being outside more.
