Im also asking this on TUMBLR to see what the general consensus is
If the r/196 vibe stays here I’m gonna keep vibin here. I’m liking lemmy so far and don’t forget: the community isn’t the subreddit - we just happened to be on that subreddit. 196 can be anywhere we want baby 🤠
The real 196 was inside us the whole time??? 🥺 👉👈
there were other things in us too😏
yep, this is definitely the 196 i know and love lmao
All of 196?? 🥺
omg 196 vore???
not going back to reddit if i have to use the ad infested, data harvesting, accessibility nightmare that is the official app.
give me apollo or give me death
There’s a high chance I’m staying here. I was part of the Digg migration and this place feels how Reddit used to feel at first. I stopped contributing to the site regularly in 2013 because the size of some communities gave me anxiety and there was a rule for every fucking thing.
Ahh a fellow Digg migrant. I kneel.
Yeah, this tbh. I understand there’s got to be basic rules, but shit like title formats and most of the time your post not going through (because of X automatically enforced rule like automatic hiding or deletion if you put a certain word or phrase in the title/post body) is just maddening. One time I did a post and the message the mod sent me explaining what was wrong with my post was almost as long as the post itself lol. I really hope this doesn’t start happening with reddit alternatives.
And yeah, the sheer size of reddit makes it almost impossible to interact with people on large subreddits. Especially if you’re commenting on a post that’s like 12 hours old on a large subreddit, your comment will never get seen just because of the deluge of already existing comments.
I’d probably return there too, but I don’t think I’ll leave here. The 196 lemmy has actually been pretty cool so far, even though it’s only been here a couple days. I’d probably just browse both.
If reddit actually reverses course on the API stuff, then hell yeah I’m going back. But if the sub just reopens after the blackout without any substantive change, nah I’m staying here.
D: why you go back when you have a non profit community running on free software?
I’m glad reddit is going down because finally FOSS can get the spotlight
Yeah, it’s a bit of a wake up call/eye opener for me. Why would I stay on a site that fully adheres to the rule “if a service is free, the user is the product”. When there’s now perfectly good non profit alternatives. Also, this is why Facebook/Twitter/Google etc need to either stay well away from the fediverse or just get defederated. As soon as they start participating they’ll just start taking over and trying to monetize the platform.
I mean, realistically I’ll probably stay on both. There are tons of great reddit communities that just don’t exist here, at least not yet, and I’m genuinely sad to be losing them. Reddit has been a part of my daily routine for well over a decade now, and that’s not something I can just give up easily. I do really like the vibes here at Lemmy, but it’s got a lot more growing to do before it can fully replace all the wonderful different niches that reddit was able to fill so well.
Im not counting on reddit to make substantive changes. Plus, it is kinda nice here, more calm, better vibes for other stuff
Ye genuinely enjoying the federated experience so far.
i like the small community vibe :)
yeah, it is not overwhelming and is actually quite nice to contribute
Definitely not going back. Reddit sucked long before this, there just wasn’t a big enough alternative.
pretty low/nonexistent. i like it here.
prob gonna gradually reduce my reddit usage anyway, but i might check it out periodically
this is the first i’ve actually engaged with 196. i knew of it, and visited the reddit a couple times, but it’s way more fun to be a part of it here, where everything about this is new and exciting. i’ll stick around here for as long as the vibe’s good, and if i dip it’ll be back into group chats – not to reddit.

In case your serious:
- Redditor creates r/195 (that was their dorm number), which has the rule that you must post before you leave
- r/195 dies (i think the og mod just stopped modding, but it’s hard to find info with the reddit blackout)
- r/196 is created with the same rule
why are you here then lol, you know you can block communities you don’t want to interact with? edit: no hate, just makin sure you know u can customize your experience to be comfortable here :)

fair hehe. 196 is a pretty important community to a lot of trans folk but i definitely agree it’s a lot if it’s brand new. you can block the community thru the Sidebar if you like :)

okay boomer
If you find it annoying you can block the community so you don’t see it anymore.
@Xxxthat_emo_kid im replying to this post from mastodon just to see how this works, since I heard you can follow lemmy servers/groups and interact with posts from a mastodon account. but yeah if the sub came back id still browse it if I’m still using reddit by then.
Hey I was kinda trying to get to use Mastodon. What instance do you recommend?
Not mastodon (something better), but I recommend mk.absturztau.be or fedi.absturztau.be :3
I have even less clue about what is this and how it works, but I’ll still check out, dear Internet stranger
Foundkey (first link) or Akkoma (second link) are services that are compatible with mastodon (ActivityPub, also works with Lemmy), but have more features, like emoji reacts.
@lazy_digestive right now I am part of a mastodon instance dedicated to the competitive Super Smash Bros community. I am a tournament organizer for Rivals of Aether, which is also a platform fighter (the same genre as Smash). A lot of people who play Rivals came from the Smash community, so it made sense for me to make an account on this instance as its a general community I am part of. I’d say try finding an instance for an online or IRL community you are part of and try to join.
@lazy_digestive On Mastodon, you have an additional “Local” timeline which is a timeline showing all the posts of the people in your instance. So you can stay connected to people through that. I know a lot of the larger instances can feel impersonal because of their size, and a bunch have turned off signing up for new accounts because of a large amount of people wanting to sign up from the Twitter exodus last year.
How did you find it from there?
@murkeyindividual2 I found the URL to the 196 lemmy from the subreddit before it went private. I learned out that you can find lemmy communities through mastodon by typing “@[CommunityName]@[lemmy instance]” into the search bar. The lemmy community shows up as a mastodon user that you and follow and such. It’s very interesting and kind of ingenious. So I thought why not just use my mastodon account I already have rather than make a new account just for lemmy.
@murkeyindividual2 on second thought actually, I’m gonna make a lemmy account. Mastodon UI us just not built for handling lemmy communities well. Still figuring this out lol.
yeah idk. its good for me to be off reddit. ill miss some of my insular halo lore arguments on reddit but lemmy seems fine so far so ill probably stay here.
really depends on the nsfw tbh it was coveiniant to have distinct but easily switchable acounts for sfw and nsfw
Idk about the ios app but you can easily switch between accounts on Jerboa. You could just make a nsfw alt on lemmynsfw.com
Yeah spent some time last night since i couldn’t sleep and got a handle on it. Theres some insular reddit groups I’ll still check with adblock but thats about it
Lemmy is love. Of course I’m staying.
I quite like it here, but if everyone else goes back to Reddit, it’ll become rather hard to scroll here
Honestly have been finding Lemmy and the Fediverse as a whole to be pretty enjoyable so far. It feels nice to be using something that was built through community effort rather than corporate interest.
