Obviously a very progressive/inclusive decision, this person is as Japanese as living in Japan for 20 years can get you, the “controversy” is ridiculous and quite frankly racist, would be like if someone an ethincally Asian UK citizen won miss UK and then got accused of pushing an Eastern standard of beauty in an ethnically Anglo-Celtic-etc nation.

You have to be such a asshole to read

“I’ve had to face barriers that often prevent me from being accepted as Japanese, so I am filled with gratitude to be recognized at this competition as a Japanese person,” she said.

And then comment it’s kinda fucked up she won this contest (as literally the first naturilzed person to do so) they should have given it to someone ethnically Japanese etc etc.

I mean that is happening all the time. Especially if the winner is black. So the controversy isn’t new. It’s still racist and stupid.

The only way these things can stay relevant. Beauty pageants are so fucking cringe and should be deleted in their entirety.

Yeah, they are cringe, but these are adults, not children. It’s the same as a bodybuilder competition, as far as I’m concerned. Not for me, but as long as people aren’t getting hurt, it’s just entertainment. Just keep the kids out of it.

So? Some yums deserved to be yucked. It’s nasty and outdated and toxic - we don’t want it.

I speak for society as a whole. People enjoy dog fights and other unethical and toxic entertainment yet that’s not an excuse to allow it. We’re better off without it objectively speaking.

Both promote suffering for entertainment. In both cases that means both contestants and societal impact.

In dog fights, dogs get killed and people seeing them normalized get desensitized towards animal cruelty.

In pageants, models are incentivized to starve themselves and to subject themselves to cosmetic surgery, and people seeing that normalized feel like they need to do the same because of body image issues.

I think the comparison is pretty spot on.

This is the first I’ve heard of the cosmetic surgery! I’m surprised they don’t treat that like steroids in major sporting competitions.

How? I genuinely believe there’s no real value in shallow events like this. I’m from Thailand and their kinda big deal here but nothing positive ever came from one other than some memes. Fortunately pageants are in extreme decline and they’ll be gone without any particular effort from us.

But if we let this happen, what’s stopping an anime character winning the competition? Or a cat? Or robot? Where do we draw the line?!?

On second thoughts, a cat would be pretty awesome. They’ll at least dominate the catwalk part of the competition.

Controversial among weebs and white racists maybe. I can’t find any prominent Japanese publication or talking head decrying the decision.

The article tries to weasel its way out by saying “inside and outside of Japan” but it seems to be mostly people writing in English on Instagram who are riled up about it.

Either give me a source that has a prominent Japanese publication or a talking head decrying the decision or stay put.

I wonder what percentage of the people writing in English about it are kids and creepy guys who use their alt account to post about being an Anime character stuck in a white person’s body.

The netuyo are probably whinging about it, but I stay away from those corners of the internet. Osaka Naomi and others have faced issues as well. Mostly, from what I remember, it’s been sports competitions where this comes up

Naomi Osaka definitely sparked a convo about whether she was Japanese enough to represent Japan, but she hasn’t lived in the country since she was three.

The exact opposite of what’s going on with Carolina, the model in question.

The top photo is unflattering because it’s at the end of the competition. There’s a better photo further down the article.

Better photo but still wouldn’t be my choice. From what I’ve seen in Japan she shouldn’t even be in the running.
