The Hill cites a lot of polls indicating that for Republican caucus-goers in Iowa, immigration is a “top-tier” issue, with 81% of GOP members polled rating it “extremely important.” The Hill then goes on to quote several Trump supporters and other Republicans, who blame immigrants for national-scale problems with drugs, economic hardship, and seemingly any other issue that can be blamed on them.

Scapegoating. This is scapegoating. And if that playbook sounds familiar, the rhetoric behind it is also becoming increasingly so — the candidate who won Iowa by a ridiculous margin has said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our nation,” and much of his party seems to agree with him.

With this in mind, it should be completely unsurprising that the man is promising “the largest mass deportation in history.”
