Mates, makeup ain’t for y’all. You know how you spent eight hours messing with your .bashrc or rolling for counter strike skins or whatever weirdass hobby you have? You don’t do it because you are trying to attract women - you see your friends get into something cool and you get competitive with them. That’s what it is for the womenfolk. They get their nails did and do weird ass makeup looks because it’s a fun hobby. They know that you probably don’t care about the difference between coffin and ballerina nails. But their friends do, and they want to show off, because it’s fun.

And the notion of what is looking good and bad is a result of heavily sexualized norms that are fed into girls at a young age already. In the effect women who chose not to wear makeup are facing backlash and are made to feel less confident.

So it isn’t just a fun hobby. It is also the expression and often submission to sexualized and sexist societal norms.

Agree. Men who go out of their way to evaluate women’s appearances and say they like women with no makeup generally mean they prefer it when women are level ten makeup astronauts who make full face look like “I just woke up this way!”

That said, the full-set lakes that make it visibly hard for a person to blink look really uncomfortable, and that makes me vicariously uncomfortable.

How do you evaluate that? I’m really asking, cause I’ve been in long-term relationships, so I’ve gone to bed next to someone who just removed their makeup and liked their face better without it, so please let me know how you evaluate that “generally” that’s what men mean - that they like full face make-up?

There’s two kinds of putting on makeup: the kind where you’re going for drama, and the kind where you try to make it look as natural as possible, highlighting features to make them look better.

Most often, when you see comments about ‘women should look like this!’ And ‘see, women without makeup look better!’ the pictures that go along with the comment are women with a very good version of the second type of makeup.

Ah, but I’m given to understand it’s only men on the internet. If that’s the case, given the large number of people, then it’s by far the biggest sample size.

Your choice to rely on data collected from internet isn’t wrong because “there are no women on the internet”, or because the sample size is too small. It’s wrong because of two things

                1. the bias of your sample, which is created by you. You’re the only one reading comments, so you’re only reading them from certain sources. Whether those sources will constitute a sample that is representative to the rest of the world is debatable

                2. People lie on the internet. For example, I am a piranha, and every time I hit a certain region of my tank’s glass, autocorrect selects one of the three words suggested, based on the location of my head bonk. Unfortunately so are most of my colleagues in this thread replying to makeup related questions, as well as everywhere else in your online presence. We’re all just fish bonking our heads on glass. We’d obviously all love makeup on women, if we understood the concept of women. Your polling sample is unfortunately tainted. But hey, at least you know now that most piranhas like makeup on women.

          My, aren’t we salty.

What I’m saying is, there is a certain type of man who goes around policing women’s appearances and beauty habits on the internet (ew, I wish they wouldn’t wear makeups… so gross!). This type also gets fussy when they have to witness a woman not having a stunningly flawless face (ew, she’s a 3, how dare she exist).

It generally means they don’t like women wearing so much make-up it is noticeable even to them.

Yeah, this statement is simply wrong. Men unconsciously notice a lot of things, and they might deny noticing even obvious ones because any acknowledgement of fashion is considered effeminate by some men.

You cannot not communicate, the societal notion as to which is “good looks” for women is strongly sexualized and children are exposed to these notions from an early age. Also the subtle or less subtle social pressure plays a big role in it. A friend of mine moved from a “posh” city to mine. She said she didn’t dare going out without putting on makeup for two hours because she would get bad looks in the street otherwise and it took her a long time to unlearn that.

So while it isn’t women wearing make up because they want to fuck, the social construction that makes them feel less confident and less comfortable without make up is revolving around that and it is part of the problem. It is not that women just feel more confident with make up. It is that they feel less confident without it, because they are pressured to feel so.

I’m a woman. We don’t do it for ourselves, we do it so outward society as a whole doesn’t call us “tired” all day. If I thought I could go into work with no makeup and not get looks or comments, I would.

And while I have my disagreement from Peterson, you’ve completely missed the point to what he said. Makeup emulates the changes a face goes through when aroused. It is tied to attraction, which is tied to sex. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp.

i just stopped wearing any makeup except lipstick and sunscreen when covid happened. i really thought about wearing it when i got my current job and decided that, if i started, i would be creating an “expectation.” i didn’t want to deal with “you look tired” on days i didn’t bother, or feel like i had to whether i wanted to mess with it or not.

now i wear makeup for fancy dress and that’s it.

but respect for people who do wear it often! i admire how nice it looks on my coworker who clearly puts time and effort into a really beautiful makeup.

But even if they didn’t, imagine this: Women can change the way they look entirely without wanting to look hotter for men. Shocking, I know.

How egotistic do you have to be to think that your opinion is warranted with regards to women’s appearance? Good for you if you think you don’t like lashes. No one asked, and I’d be willing to bet you’d see a woman with full face on including lashes or mascara and think she looks great. 🙄

The men in this thread calling women repulsive for wearing lashes are unbelievable. Imagine saying something so horrible to someone about an aspect of their appearance you personally think you don’t like. And then you wonder why no one wants to date you.

The bumper sticker slogan isn’t really wrong, i think most of us are ignorant to what we do/don’t like in this regard. I would have never said that before a month ago tbh because my wife never got them, and then when she did, I said why waste the money you dont need them. Then found myself staring at her more. I still prob wouldnt say it. As the women have shown in here we can be pretty oblivious. And I think im fairly in tune with small details making a big difference.

Every single human being is held to the standards of hygiene. Being unhygienic is bad for your health and can spread disease. Men are not held to the same standards of hygiene that women are. Men are not held to the same standards of appearance that women are. Men are not punished for failing to meet those standards in the same way that women are.

Do you think women don’t get judged for being unhygienic? I run into men in public all the time who I can smell from 30 yards away and who are covered in dirt or oil or God knows what. I very rarely run into women who are comparably unkempt. Women face severe social consequences for being even slightly unkempt. Even if they’re trades workers.

And none of this is even relevant to the topic which is about makeup.

I knew a girl with thin eyelashes in junior high/high school. She got made fun of for it a lot, by both girls and boys. So, I’m guessing some girls want thick lashes because they learned the hard way that guys do indeed care, and unfortunately society cares in general.

You probably find extreme falsies repulsive, but you probably wouldn’t notice a natural filling in if them. And, you wouldn’t find a lack of natural lashes very attractive either.

There are two extreme sides. Yeah, if you dont have many lashes to begin with, men will notice it as a flaw.

Right now, extremely large lashes are popular. I suspect it arose from Instagram makeup posts, or Instagram beauty in general. Eyelashes are harder to see in photos, so putting them on causes a fuller look. There are lots of women today who still wear a full face of Instagram makeup every day. The look today is extreme.

The sad reality of false lashes are that their regular lashes will eventually all or mostly fall out with extended use, both the glue on ones and the thraded in one’s. It’s a self-fulfilling cycle, because eventually they’ll have no natural lashes at all, causing them to have to wear them.

I used to wear falsies once a week back in 2010/2011 for a fashion meetup I attended. As soon I saw my natural lashes start falling out, I stopped. Now I only wear them if a Halloween costume calls for it. It’s not worth it otherwise.

And before anyone comes at me with: “But if you wear them pRoPeRlY-!”

It doesn’t matter. Humans aren’t infallible and mistakes happen. Over a long enough period, those lashes are coming out.

Yes, guys care, but what we have today isn’t just a reaction to men caring, it’s Instagram selfish culture in general.

Gotdamn yall. Some men think it’s hot, some men don’t. Some women do wear makeup for others, some women don’t. More broadly, no one group does anything for a single reason so we need to stop being so combative online about shit posts.

I think girls who get long eyelashes do it because they like how they look.

And thank god if they do because I would hate a woman who only cares about what other people think of her looks.

No dude has ever said “she’d look hotter if her lips and cheeks were redder,” either but ya’ll would cry if we stopped wearing lipstick and blush. Quit your bullshit.

Seriously. I’m sure some people will hyperfixate on the lipstick/rouge example you gave, but generally many guys don’t understand or think about makeup and thus have no awareness of how it impacts how they’re attracted to people. And then they have the gall to lecture others about what works and what doesn’t.

Also shoutout to some of the straight up sexist replies in this thread. Nice to see a sizable chunk of reddit neckbeards made their way over here.

I would say it is kind of sexist to state that all men would cry if women stopped wearing blush and lipstick, and that we don’t realize what we are attracted to. We aren’t a hivemind. I personally prefer natural over makeup.

That being said, yea some of these replies are douchey as hell, and I’m sorry for women who have to deal with that bullshit.

You might be a rare exception that actually means what they say, but the vast majority of men who say “I personally prefer natural over makeup” don’t realize that our “natural” that they love is quite often still a light touch of makeup here and there. Not to mention the sexist implication that we’re necessarily doing it for you.

There are most definitely a ton of men out there who think like that, so I completely understand. I think women can be beautiful with makeup, too, I just feel there is too much pressure for women to wear it, when it should be an entirely personal choice.

I would like to at least make it known that there are men who think women and feminine souls of all types can be attractive without makeup, as well.

not to mention, I get dressed and think “I look good today!”

at no point do i think, “I wonder if the average woman would like me wearing this, and if they wouldn’t I will never wear it again”

I mean I’m bi, so I guess it’s “any given person”

if I had to dress entirely like any person anywhere in the world would like what I’m wearing I’d end up looking like a waiter every day.

But then some people think that women somehow are considering “the average guy” in their dressing habits. I assume the majority of the world gives very little thought to other people when getting dressed.

To be fair guys would still have sex with you if you didn’t wear make-up at all. It’s just that if you like the way you look with make-up, do your thing. I hardly wear any make-up because my cheeks turn red naturally and I don’t want to hide that and add artificial blush. I’ll just do lipstick and smokey eyes.

I don’t think so? Maybe blush, but I don’t know any guy who really likes lipstick. Same with fake nails.

Fake nails look awful. Don’t know why anyone would consider claws attractive. Lipstick can look alright though.

Red lipstick is the worst. Makes the wearer look clownish.

Fun fact. Men have actually on average longer eyelashes than women. It makes sense when you think about the fact that their hormones promote men’s hair growth.

That means eyelashes, ironically enough, are a masculine feature.

I am sorry for sharing this opinion, but finding something attractive because it is hard to put sounds similar to asian tradition of breaking little girl’s feet to make it small so they would look more “attractive”.

And while putting fake eyelashes doesn’t seem to hurt anyone, enjoying such thing does seem wrong to me. It is just another fake ritual of mating dance made by fashion industry. Do you really consider yourself no good enough to be loved without ones?

Do you think people only wear things to make themselves look hot?

…do you think maybe some gals might just like having long eyelashes?
