You demanded they do this. You said zero covid was a human rights violation. You got your wish. Now shut up.
This is a response to domestic demands. China doesn’t give af about public opinion in other countries, least of all the US. I don’t necessarily think they’ve done awfully, but from what I’ve heard they didn’t really use the time they bought with the zero COVID policy very well to prepare for when they would eventually need to lift the zero COVID policy.
It’s unclear to me how well China’s population is protected. There are two questions that seem to top the list. First, how immune are individuals? Do they have the vaccinations necessary to handle this strain of COVID-19? Second, how well equipped is the health care system? Is there enough capacity to handle patients coming in? How are stockpiles of pharmaceuticals that have been shown to be effective in treating acute COVID-19 infections?
They are actually very vaxxed up over 80% so ppl are going back to claiming their vaccines are shit. Keep in mind the severity of the pandemic in the US (which everyone is comparing the numbers to) is not reflected in the numbers. Our testing was garbage, we had a huge spike of unidentified respiratory disease deaths. China’s probably just going to release real numbers which are proportional to their population and everyone is going to froth at the mouth about mass deaths.
From what I’ve seen, there has been independent testing that has shown that Sinovac is at least reasonably effective. It’s won’t completely stop a COVID-19 infection, but it is near 100% for severe COVID. That said, for China’s scale that still means a 20% unvaccinated population will severely impact hospitals, especially in areas that have higher rates of vaccine hesitancy or are not prepared for a wave of infections.
More things to consider: are there mask mandates and are FFP2/3 level masks used? How widely air purifiers are used to reduce virus levels in air?
I’m not sure about air purifiers, but my impression is that China is really good about masks, mandate or no. They’ve already gone through a fairly recent airborne pandemic and it became a cultural norm to wear a mask when possibly sick.
Why don’t you post the same shit for the US which did literally nothing and let millions die? You doing CIA job for free.
I’ve already posted about that. The US did a shit job and a bunch of people died. I would hope China doesn’t have the same thing happen.
Edi: And I especially lay the blame at Donald Trump’s feet. He politicized it from the start, ensuring that his followers would not take COVID-19 seriously. A better president could have brought the country together, but instead he made recklessness a political sign.
We should not resort to whataboutism. US Covid response being garbage does not change the fact that this was a huge mistake that is going to backfire.
