In neighboring Indonesia, nickel extraction is causing environmental and social devastation.

I admit, I did not read the long article. Of course the mining of the resources necessary for electric cars is not without downsides, like a lot of resources. Care should be taken that the downsides are minimized.

The good thing is once the resources are mined and they are used in a battery, they can be recycled almost completely. Whereas once petrol is burned, it’s gone forever.

Why can’t there be any human invention without huge downsides for the environment?

In this case, it’s because the main focus shouldn’t have been to electrify individual transport, but to to get rid of it and built up public transportation.

Because environmental disasters are not under the eyes of those who want new products every day. The problem is probably not EV in this case since those remove 1.5 gigatonnes of pollution. The ‘always new product’ trend is the real culprit

On the plus side, remember, the big trucks are actually removing nickel from the ground! So there will be less contaminated ground later. Mexico is so much better since it’s not contaminated with silver, gold or copper. But I won’t see the day when it’s not contaminated with iron.
