Tumblr will add support for ActivityPub, the open, decentralized social networking protocol that today is powering social networking software like Twitter alternative Mastodon, the Instagram-like Pixelfed, video streaming service PeerTube, and others.

Mastodon (as well as Friendica, Pleroma, and probably most other platforms) have options to either treat all users on another instance as suspended, and/or block all communications with an instance, and IIRC this is what people call defederation. It’s functionally equivalent to “not following Tumblr.”
