So I, unfortunately, came across this TikTok on my FYP and it set off major alarms. First of all, why the hell did it come onto my page, and second, is this even true? If you don’t want to watch the TikTok I’ve got you covered:
The person who made the TikTok cites these books and articles:
Dear Leader My Escape From North Korea by Jane Jin Sung
Nothing To Envy Ordinary Lives In North Korea by Barbara Demick
Rogue Regime Kim Jong Il and the looming threat of North Korea by Jasper Decker
Without You, There Is No Us by Suki Kim
Under The Loving Care Of The Fatherly Leader by Bradley K. Martin

Transcript:
“The pleasure squad is comprised of about 2000 North Korean girls divided into three different teams: there’s the sexual services team, the massages team, and the entertainment team. These young girls are appointed to the squad in middle school or high school, typically between the ages of 13 to 16 and they serve for about 10 years. This squad is run as official part of the government. It’s under the Cadres department, which is run by this man, Kim Phyong Hae, and it not only serves Kim Jong Un, it serves his top leaders and his inner circle. This squad is also nothing new in North Korea. Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il, and his father, Kim Il Sung. Both had pleasure squads for themselves. The government has an official process which they do every single year to find new girls for the squad. Theres also specific selection criteria for who they can choose to put on the squad and I want to read a firsthand account from this book (Nothing to Envy) on what the process looks like: this is a firsthand account from a woman named Mi-ran
now, fortunately, Mi-ran was not selected to go any further, her family was not at a high enough social class for her to be selected, but the girls who do go further have to meet strict criteria: they have to be a certain height, free of scars and blemishes, and had to have a soft, feminine voice, they were also required to be a virgin. After the top girls are selected they are sent to Section 5 of the Cadres department. The Cadres department reviews the list, whittles them down, and then sends their final selections to the North Korean leader. He then handpicks who he wants to be on his squad, thee new recruits go to a six month training course before they start, they are then assigned to one of the royal residences around North Korea. It says 32 here but there’s a lot more nowadays. This book (Rogue Regime) is a little bit old. We have stories from men who are either related to the North Korean leader, or served him in some capacity, talking about the Pleasure Squad. The girls were constant presences at guest houses regardless of what team they were on. They typically all had to do some sort of sexual services including stripping naked or playing erotic games. Once the girls have served a decade, when they hit their mid twenties, they’re retired from their roles, they’re typically then married off to elite guards of Kim Jong Un and regardless, they’re kept under close watch because they’ve seen so much behind the scenes. Theres only one case in history where we know a group of girls were allowed to return to their families; they were each paid $4000, which is a lot in North Korea, as well as giving gifts in exchange for swearing to secrecy. Anybody who broke this pledge would be immediately executed.”
Sorry but i’m not even going to read through all this filth, this is nothing more than the sick fantasies of disturbed minds and the typical propaganda fabrications that the “defector” industry under the tutelage of western intelligence services always engage in. It is the Korean equivalent of blood libel and should be treated with the exact same contempt. I am willing to bet they don’t provide a single shred of evidence for this Yeonmi Park-“we had to push the trains every day while rats ate our intestines”-level bullshit.
The evidence they cite are from the books and articles listed. Calling it evidence is a stretch but that’s all the video gives. It’s very flimsy but the comments are easily convinced and according to the TikToker her entire page is dedicated to North Korea. She seems to have a lot of reach too which is distressing…
Yeah that’s not evidence. Yeonmi Park could write a library full of books of her fantastical fairy tales and it still wouldn’t constitute evidence. What makes these authors any more trustworthy? Has any part of their story been verified by independent sources? Do they cite any verifiable evidence for these claims in their books and articles or just more of the same alleged hearsay and anecdotes?
The US and its puppet regime in occupied Korea have a documented history of coercing and bribing defectors into telling stories which many of these people later themselves admit were total fabrications.
When reading books written in the imperial core, about the enemies/targets of imperialist nations, I would keep this in mind:
Former CIA case officer John Stockwell: Well for example, in my war, the Angola war, that I helped to manage, one third of my staff was propaganda. […] We would take stories which we would write and put them in the Zambia Times, and then pulled them out and sent them to a journalist on our payroll in Europe. But his cover story, you see, would be what he had gotten from his stringer in Lusaka, who had gotten them from the Zambia Times. We had the complicity of the government of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda if you will, to put these false stories into his newspapers. But after that point, the journalists, Reuters and AFP, the management was not witting of it. Now, our contact man in Europe was. And we pumped just dozens of stories about Cuban atrocities, Cuban rapists–in one case we had the Cuban rapists caught and tried by the Ovimbundu maidens who had been their victims, and then we ran photographs that made almost every newspaper in the country of the Cubans being executed by the Ovimbundu women who supposedly had been their victims.
Interviewer: These were fake photos?
Stockwell: Oh, absolutely. We didn’t know of one single atrocity committed by the Cubans. It was pure, raw, false propaganda to create an illusion of communists, you know eating babies for breakfast and the sort. Totally false propaganda.
Interviewer: John, was this sort of thing practiced in Vietnam?
Stockwell: Oh, endlessly. A massive propaganda effort in Vietnam in the '50s and in the '60s, including the thousand books that were published–several hundred in English–that were also propaganda books sponsored by the CIA. Give some money to a writer, “Write this book for us, write anything you want, but on these matters, make sure, you know, you have this line.”
Interviewer: Writers in this country? Books sold and distributed in this culture?
Stockwell: Sure. Yeah. English language books, meaning an American audience as a target, on the subject of Vietnam and the history of Vietnam, and the history of Marxism, and supporting the domino theory, et cetera.
Interviewer: Without opening us up to a lawsuit, could you name one of them?
Stockwell: No, I could not. The Church Committee, when they found this out, demanded that they be given the titles so that the university libraries could at least go and stamp inside “Central Intelligence Agency’s version of history,” and the CIA refused because it’s been commissioned to protect its sources and methods, and the sources would be the authors who wrote these false propaganda books, some of whom are now distinguished scholars and journalists.
Also note:
-
It’s a recognized problem in south Korea that “time and time again, conservative outlets and foreign media circulate and reproduce rumors [about DPRK] based on questionable sources … retractions and apologies are rarely ever provided when the reports are shown to be false” and “Sometimes, the South Korean government itself has been the epicenter of false reports … The situation has been made worse by defector groups aggressively proliferating claims from unverified ‘North Korean sources,’ as if attempting to draw attention to themselves.”
-
South Korea’s national intelligence service (NIS) forges documents to frame people and tortures them into false confessions as well as pays defectors for sensational stories and harasses and silences people who say positive things about DPRK (and takes away their passports so they can’t go back, even when they came to south Korea against their will)
-
UN human rights researchers who have worked directly with defectors from DPRK have written about how testimonies are made unreliable by cash incentives paid by the NIS and other organizations: “North Korean refugees are well aware of what the interviewer wants to hear. … The more terrible their stories are, the more attention they receive. The more international invitations they receive, the more cash comes in. It is how the capitalist system works: competition for more tragic and shocking stories. … In my 16 years of studying North Korean refugees, I have experienced numerous inconsistent stories, intentional omission and lies. I have also witnessed some involved in fraud and other illicit activities. In one case the breach of trust was so significant that I could not continue research.”
Edit: So, to summarize – Former CIA case officers have discussed how they pay academics and journalists to write thousands of books about foreign communist enemies that contain whatever content the author wants as long as it pushes certain specific lines; the CIA regularly plants false stories into foreign newspapers and gets them circulated around; the NIS (formerly the “KCIA”, formed on the US-backed side during the Korean War to combat communists) is known to forge documents, extract false confessions, pay people to lie or embellish to the point that mainstream south Korean liberal media and UN researchers say it’s making it too hard to tell what’s true; defectors with sensational stories receive payments and get book deals and international speaking tours while people with positive things to say get arrested and surveilled by intelligence agencies…So, keep that info in mind as you consider what’s going on with these books.
Wasn’t there one of the heads of the CIA that said something along the lines of “when the American people do not know fact from fiction, the CIA will have achieved it’s goal”?
If there is a Big Bad in this story of Earth, they run the CIA.

"Whatever is written in a book is right — such is still the mentality of culturally backward Chinese peasants. Strangely enough, within the Communist Party there are also people who always say in a discussion, “Show me where it’s written in the book.” When we say that a directive of a higher organ of leadership is correct, that is not just because it comes from “a higher organ of leadership” but because its contents conform with both the objective and subjective circumstances of the struggle and meet its requirements. It is quite wrong to take a formalistic attitude and blindly carry out directives without discussing and examining them in the light of actual conditions simply because they come from a higher organ. It is the mischief done by this formalism which explains why the line and tactics of the Party do not take deeper root among the masses. To carry out a directive of a higher organ blindly, and seemingly without any disagreement, is not really to carry it out but is the most artful way of opposing or sabotaging it.
The method of studying the social sciences exclusively from the book is likewise extremely dangerous and may even lead one onto the road of counter-revolution. Clear proof of this is provided by the fact that whole batches of Chinese Communists who confined themselves to books in their study of the social sciences have turned into counter-revolutionaries. When we say Marxism is correct, it is certainly not because Marx was a “prophet” but because his theory has been proved correct in our practice and in our struggle. We need Marxism in our struggle. In our acceptance of his theory no such formalisation of mystical notion as that of “prophecy” ever enters our minds. Many who have read Marxist books have become renegades from the revolution, whereas illiterate workers often grasp Marxism very well. Of course we should study Marxist books, but this study must be integrated with our country’s actual conditions. We need books, but we must overcome book worship, which is divorced from the actual situation.
How can we overcome book worship? The only way is to investigate the actual situation."
they recruit young girls to serve as sex crime victims for the powerful elite
Ngl sounds like projection again
I instantly thought of that too, like “huh this sounds a lot like Hollywood which has actual evidence of these crimes!” Hit dogs holler I guess…
I want to read a firsthand account […] this is a firsthand account
The book’s author [1] wrote:—
Mi-ran [2] had heard all about this from a friend [3] whose cousin [4] had been one of the chosen.
I have no idea whether it’s true or not, but I do know what is and isn’t a first-hand account.
No, seriously, I was so damn confused while transcribing this.
No, it’s true! My cousin’s dentist’s brother’s coke-dealer works for RFA and says it is all true!
It’s the other way around: the RFA works for the coke dealer.
It’s funny bc this is what the Japanese did in Korea
The whole thing is definitely projection
Yeah 😂
Same sources as for the mortar and flamethrower executions after which people are resurrected with Juche necromancy?
Universal answer.
Thing about sources for shit going on in DPRK is that it’s a closed country and the main source is always the refugees who don’t have a very bright future in South Korea/West, unless they make themselves useful to propaganda. Like that pedo shit Shin Dong-hyuk. And when you ask people spreading this shit about their sources they either site people like that, books based on nothing or testimony of people like that, or honestly say that it’s a closed country so no one knows, but they’re gonna say these things anyway, because they’re fighting tOtAlItArIaNiSm or some shit and they know anyway that people of North Korea suffer, cause they have to, according to their worldview.
There is, like, one decent regional expert on Korea in Russia and we’re bordering the place. I can’t imagine anything written in the west has any chances of not being politicized.
Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: If you spend all your time assembling and trying to refute the insane claims people make about the DPRK, you will be busy until you retire. If somebody makes claims like this, the only thing you should need to say is a demand for proof. A “first hand account” that is nothing but heresay of heresay written by a USian who has never actually been in the country doesn’t really hold water. Seriously, “this author heard it from a girl who knew a girl whose cousin was selected” is actually the crux of the account.
More absurd fantasy about the DPRK from the psycho-sexual id of the western brain. Just projection and about as real as Juche necromancy and all haircuts but Kim’s being banned but also use of his being banned and everyone believing he doesn’t poop.
Fun fact: this was a painful experience as I had to transcribe this shit by hand.
Lemme guess, you used a phone or tablet…
Yes lol, I have an external keyboard for my tablet and I didn’t have access to an automatic transcriber so I typed it all out. It was painful because I hate listening to horrible propaganda especially if it’s about the DPRK. I transcribed it so no one else had to sit through it if they didn’t want to. I figured I’d share anyway because of how many views/likes the original video had which shows it’s reach…
I mean, I guess you could’ve left it at the photos but o7…
I was transcribing what the person in the TikTok was saying, not the written books, that’s why I took screenshots. Maybe I’m misunderstanding…
Oh idk that, ight I see…
You’re good, comrade! I should have specified what I was transcribing.
i thought this was literally too ridiculous to be true but my friends are completely convincing edit: *convinced
Most people in the west are so flooded with bullshit about the DPRK that they are literally living in a “post-truth” reality on the country. They legitimately cannot handle the idea that it is a real place, it’s this hypothetical “perfect evil villain country” to most westerners, the place where all the bad things happen all the time. Not only do they not actually think about how such a society could run, how their economy could possibly work, or how if a society were to be as horrific as they claim it would collapse within a few short years, they are actively hostile to these concepts. They refuse to view the people there as people, they are dehumanised to such an extreme extent that they can’t imagine anyone in the country, “evil dictator” or “innocent victim” actually doing anything every single normal human does.
That’s insightful. When I’ve spoken to people about the DPRK, it’s like they can’t imagine someone there going to bed at the same time every night after a wash, getting up, having breakfast, commuting to work, and all the rest of it. If these things didn’t generally happen, the wouldn’t be a country there at all. Certainly not one powerful enough to keep the US at bay for decades.
We’re dealing with people who don’t have a class analysis. They don’t know that workers are the motive force of history, so they have an idealist version of everywhere rather than a model that builds up from the question: so how does everyone stay alive? We might still need some hypotheses as it’s hard to get many details about the DPRK in particular, but there are nonetheless some things that must be true and some things that cannot be true.
Like unicorn caves, for example. It’s a ridiculous story. The unicorns are free range because how else do you harvest their horns to do Juche necromancy?
Did you forget a /s, here? Edit: ight *convinced, I guess all is forgiven here…
no, i meant to say convinced. i am not that stupid
Uh sorry, just wanted to clarify…
oh no, don’t be sorry. id be shocked too lol

level sexual fanfic garbage. Reading it made my skin crawl - not because I am worried it is actually happening, but because some sick state agency fuck imagined this disturbed ass scenario.
Projection and propaganda is all it is. I’d bet 1000:1 that the person who wrote this offensive drivel is a violent pedo before I’d wager KJU is.
I’m one of the people here who’s more critical of the North Korean Communist Party here, and this story still doesn’t ring true.
The Pleasure Squad, said to be 2,000 in number, serves not only Kim Jong-Un (Il), but serves other high-ranking party members as well. However, the testimonies of high-ranking defectors, such as a couple of diplomats, and the former chairman of the people’s assembly. does not include the Pleasure Squad. It is said to be a secretive group and common people aren’t aware of its existence, yet detailed testimonies about the group comes from regular people who somehow know about the composition, selection criteria, numbers, etc. etc… The contradictions regarding this group just doesn’t resolve, and the likely explanation is that the group doesn’t exist.
well…imagine leaving the respectable and totally legit “sex squad” of DPRK to end as a normal prostitute in ROK or in the fake “lolita island”
I’ve never heard of them until now
