This is tipping culture out of control.
Tipping culture is tipping culture out of control.
You should see the insane way it’s worshipped in the USA, all as an obviously thin front to avoid paying wages and giving workers rights. It’s wild.
Worshiped? What country do you live in? The biggest argument I see for it is ‘its absolutely bullshit but some jobs that’s almost all they make’
I don’t think I’ve ever, in my 41 years here, seen a single human being say it’s an amazing system.
You’ve never gotten into an argument with someone who says they tip their mechanic and doctor and thinks everybody should do the same?
There absolutely are people in the US who believe that everybody you interact with as a customer should be tipped because they believe all the propaganda from the likes of Readers Digest and Wall Street Journal. They believe everybody must be tipped because covid and “How are those jobs any different from being a server? It’s a SERVICE!” It’s beyond ridiculous. I worked in retail and food service (not tipped) for a long time and would have been embarrassed to have to resort to begging for tips.
Tip culture worship is real. I’ve run into plenty of people online and offline who think that tips should be mandatory everywhere, of all walks of life.
People tipping their doctor? I don’t even pay my doctor, my insurance does that.
Yup, I’ve seriously gotten into arguments with people who insist on tipping the doctor.
Tf are you on about? Idk where you’re getting your impressions from but it is absolutely not ‘worshipped’ in the US.
I think it’s shopped
I could see them doing this
shopping culture is out of control here
Hopefully it’s close to a tipping point
Corpos with their first already up your ass, now asking for more: “Come on, just
thea tip?”

Pretty sure that’s not a touch screen, as evidenced by the buttons on the side. My assumption is photoshopped but also only a matter of time.
In mexico ATMs are like this, touch and with buttons that still work.
Same in Germany.
The buttons are for the visually impaired and you can let a voice read out your choices in order.
Same

The buttons are for the visually impaired.
Kinda like this flat printed Braille?
That is some truly malicious compliance on what is clearly a sticker

I always loved having to make sure the aids for the visually impaired worked, ON THE DRIVE-THOUGH!
The amount of people not recognizing this as fake really, really bothers me.
Considering how bad begging people for tips has become, it’s understandable they wouldn’t.
The amount of people talking about video ads on their gas pumps really bothers me. That seems faker than the tip screen to me, yet the level of discussion makes it sound common.
So I’m not sure what I’m supposed to think anymore.
Where do you live where you’ve never encountered this? I live in New England, and its not at every gas station, but its not uncommon.
I don’t remember at what company, but I’ve seen this more than once and it’s always hilarious. It’s quite funny watching my SO try and find the hidden mute or close ad button too. I’m glad I’m not from the US myself.
None of the gas stations around me have rhe “mute” button enabled, but thankfully most of the stations locally don’t blare ads at you while pumping gas. There was one station that tried it years ago and their pumps were constantly vandalized.
their pumps were constantly vandalized
good. as they should be.I’m honestly usually surprised that gas stations are often far removed from the highway, and that people used to pump gas for you in many areas.
The ads at gas stations are so unnecessary and dumb, and the tips are so so strange.
Kwik Trip has the same mute button on all of their pumps, but not all stations have it labeled. I imagine it’ll be similar for other chains. But if nothing else press all of the buttons and any fun combination you can think of and see what happens! On many card kiosks pressing the 4 corners will force-reboot the computer in it for example
Sometimes it’s a 2-key combo, 1 on each side. :) Just experiment.
I should not have to find the combination to get a gas pump to stop advertizing to me. There should be zero ads, or at the least an easy to find and clearly marked “mute” button. It’s easier to break things than it is to find the right buttons.
I can see this happening on a system originally designed for a different retail environment, and nobody bothered to get rid of the tip screen.
Or someone was about to disable the tip screen and some clueless middle manager asked if the tip screen could increase the amount of the sale, then ordered it left in.
This has to be from theonion
Drink a verification can of Mountain Dew to continue pumping gas.
So since you’re the one providing the labour in the transaction, this means you’re getting a tip FROM the gas station, right? R… Right?
In which case I’ll choose the 200% tip
Yes, you just have to pay it yourself since you are also the customer
Wait, you guys don’t pump your own gas by default? Is this some American thing I’m too europoor to understand?
Most states do (illegal to pump your own in New Jersey), but the joke is more about tipping culture in this country.
In some parts of New York you have to wait and have someone else pump your gas, they call them and attendant. I lived in New York for a while, and it was just terrible, any gas station that required you to wait for someone else to pump your gas I just drove past. Because they would always be slow as hell. Meanwhile it was a clear in and out at all of the self-service stations
I’ve almost never seen this in NY. It’s a jersey thing, and it’s stupid as fuck.
It depends on where you are in New York, I lived in Niskayuna for a while, most of them were self-service, but I had at least one or two telling me to get into a line and wait for someone to pump my gas for me. And I just left immediately, next door had the same number of pumps, but no line because it was an establishment that was fully self-service. Meanwhile the one that wanted me to wait in line only had one guy attending the pumps.
I imagine the closer you get to Jersey the more common it is
I’ve been around all of NY, and even right next to Jersey it’s still not common. Maybe within Manhattan or Staten Island as those are the only 2 boroughs where I’ve never gotten gas, but even places right on the border of NJ mostly don’t have it. Agreed tho, hate anywhere that does it and I’ll just leave immediately.
For the record I am talking about the state not the city.
Likewise, but I see why my comment would make you think I was only referring to the city.
It was a common thing when I lived there. I told people I had moved to New York and I kept getting spiels about how a North Carolina chick like me could never survive the big city… when given more context they calmed down.
I lived in Oneonta for a bit before Niskayuna. It had been temporary. I was only there to have my GRS done (am trans) went back home when the procedure was finally done
I was so glad to make the switch. I had so many people larping Southerners there, talking about how they’re “Just like the dude from Duck Dynasty” and how great my home state was because “Everyone down there is rich becauae liberals don’t make them pay taxes!”
It was certainly eye opening. I suddenly knew how a Native American feels when John Jackson over at the frathouse puts on a feathered headdress and starts talking about “Hunting buffalo for many moons” in his worst impression of whatever racist old Western he’s seen.
I think what made me hit the peak of this nonsense was when I was eating at a local diner where the owners were speaking in a (blatantly forced) Southern Accent one morning, and I asked if they served grits.
They looked at me as if I had just asked for them to kill and serve me their pet dog, even had some guy (one of their regulars, it was a small town) munching a bagel audibly voice his disgust that someone would actually ask for grits.
Ya know what we call people who eat bagels in North Carolina? Tourists
And I think anyone who’s seen My Cousin Vinny knows how much we Southern folk like our grits.
When I moved to Niskayuna the situation improved. Sure it looked less like my home town, but that was for the best… I’d rather have Real New Yorkers introducing me to the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life than Fake Southerners scolding me for wanting grits.
In Mexico there are people working in the gas station, and it is up to you to tip or not, I usually only do it when they (unasked) clean my windows.
Please tell me this is photoshopped and these fuckers aren’t seriously asking for tips at self service stations…
Hey, don’t be so cruel. These machines are paid below minimum wage, and if you don’t tip, they won’t be able to pay their rent and student loans.
they won’t be able to pay their rent and student loans.
You mean their software subscriptions and cloud storage fees.
Yeh. Rent and student loans.
Those night classes to move up from soda dispenser to gas pump will pay off eventually.
Do real servers not deserve to pay their rent/student loans?
No
Starve
Yeah haha definitely fake, these pumps don’t have touch screens so this interface wouldn’t work on them. Choices have to be aligned with the 4 buttons on the left and right. Second one from the top on the right side will mute the ads also.
I’m sorry, did you just say “mute the ads”? Damn, america really is in the terminal stages of late stage capitalism
Second one from the top on the right side will mute the ads also.
Not always.
Yeah I’ve never gotten any of the buttons to do it.
Internet wives tale.Strange, it’s worked at every pump I’ve tried
Yeah same with me. Circle K is the only place around here whose pumps play ads though, so maybe it’s just their machines it works on. Someone even scrawled “<- mute” in permanent marker next to the button on all their pumps.
Yeah, very angrily discovered this the other day while filling up my bike. Ear plugs go right back in, in spite of needing the break.
It for sure works at every Circle K I’ve been to, at least.
It’s because the POS (point of sale) software isn’t customized for the application correctly. Either through laziness, ignorance, indifference, or a level of greed that only insane troll logic could make sense of
Sure, I’ll leave a -20% tip!
Here’s a tip; stop asking for a tip.
Not only do you pump your own gas you also are the one to pay at the pump and deal with any issues that come up.
I scan my own groceries and i’ll keep track of the hours to eventually hit them with a “freelance register operater” bill for €55 an hour.
As i’m freelance i need to pay 49% taxes on that and another x amount for insuring myself in case i have a work related accident, i’ll be left with roughly €20 an hour which is a little over my actual wage as i’m apparently so skilled they want me to do the job so it must be worth it to them.
I think everyone everywhere should pull this shit, even if it’s just to make a point. Show them how much they rely on free labour while living in big houses and driving fancy cars lol.
This is why we have arson
It seem to be best practice, and predatory best practice.
Some people fear of being jugded if they don’t follow the mass. And the tip screen make them question themselves like “everybody else tip, what will they think if I don’t ?” “What if someone watch over my shoulder and feel disgusting if I don’t tip ?”
And those people we call “suckers”
Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. (Augustine)
If only I could give a negative tip.
This is clearly fake. Tip screens all now start at 20 or 25% .
You pump gas good! TIP YOSELF
