Well, the closest station outside of DC, Arlington VA according to Google, is about 15$(with 83+ for a pet and 10-20$ per luggage/bike fees)…
So I’d say maybe a few stations further than the closest station to DC.
Seems like it’s about 50cents a mile for a customer on Amtrak after a little more Googling, while it’s an average of 58cents(which includes registration/insurance/repairs/etc) a mile for a car. So ultimately, you might save a little money with the Amtrak, but it’s not a big money saver.
It varies a huge amount. You can get DC to NYC tickets for under $50 if you buy at the last second. Most trains don’t fill up and they basically give away the remaining seats with like 8 hours to go.
Meanwhile I can amtrak to DC for $30 round trip 🤷
From where?
This statement doesn’t make much sense without context.

I’ll have to remember this 🤔
True, but it’s sort of hard to use that stance as a comparative though. Average 1 way is 168$ from NYC to DC.
Comparing outliers, I’d imagine hitchhikers and train hoppers will end up winning pretty evenly
58cent is IRS estimate which is under estimating the cost inherently due to state bias.
Also, not even accounting for crazy car prices recently
And parking and sitting in traffic

What costs are you adding for a train…
Asking for a friend
Well, the misc carry on fees is an easy one to point out without creating random scenarios
Carry on fees on a train.
Yes. Amtrak charges carry on fees
Sure, but I’m not disclosing my location on Lemmy. 🤷
I’m sure a bit of diddling on their site could give you an idea of how far $X will get you.
