No respect for the OG. RIP RiF.
I still have the app on my phone. After over a decade of use, I can’t bear to uninstall. Seeing it’s icon is like seeing a loved one’s ashes in my living room.
You can patch your own api key into it with revanced manager
Wish I would have known that…
I bought rif premium after they announced the api change, used it for so long. Probably wont delete it for a long time.

Posted using Sync for Lemmy

It’s so fucking good. I thought I missed Reddit. No, I missed Sync!
Sync is GOAT. IMO using the app makes me somehow want to comment more than what I expected.
I know, right. In my idle phone time I’m reading the same small pool of posts over and over on Lemmy instead of whatever’s on Reddit because the app experience is just so much better.
“Adulthood is when you find your favorite bread has disappeared from the grocery store.”
- Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen (poorly translated)
As a German this scenario is both unrealistic and at the same time devastating
Our village baker retired and there was no one to pick up the mantle. Now there is a block of flats where once was the bakery.
And they even had bread from a wood fired oven every Thursday… * sniff *
I just make my own, now.
I use them with Revanced. Sorry Lemmy, but you’re not even close to Reddit’s content quality. You’re improving though.
I love Lemmy. It’s just like reddit from when I joined in 2012. With Sync for Lemmy, it’s easy to use as well
Lemmy is a great platform considering how new it is, but the conversation is still majorly about being on Lemmy and how Reddit = bad, and the Fediverse. It’s very fatiguing.
I’m using sync revanced for Reddit, the problem is it’s only a matter of time before the API changes and the app stops working. Until then though I’ll use both sync for reddit and sync for lemmy side by side
I wasn’t aware of the fact that the API changes would affect the Revanced workaround. Also, haven’t the API changes already happened?
Yeah, Reddit hasn’t really changed the API itself with these recent changes, they just made the keys to it cost money.
An API is basically a communication standard between the app and Reddit, that standard changes as new features are added or decisions are made. The app might make a request like getvideo and expect to get a video with the .redditvid extension. Now let’s say Reddit decided to fix their shitty video player and now they start rolling out a new video format, .redditvidgood, and update the API so that getvideo returns this new type.
Now the app makes a getvideo request and gets a .redditvidgood video, but it has no idea how to handle this format, it’s still expecting the old .redditvid format. At best the app will fail to load these new videos but still function otherwise, at worst the app will crash any time it tries to load a video. In this example, even with the best case scenario most videos don’t work anymore. It’s only a matter of time before a change completely breaks all apps that don’t update for the current API, and only a dev with the source code can make those updates to the app.
What about apps like Relay for Reddit? They are continuing with a paid model in the future and are complying with the API changes. They should be unaffected by this, if I’ve understood correctly? Relay is my app of choice.
In the case of “legit” apps that are following the new rules, they will be fine. The dev will likely have knowledge of an upcoming API change before it’s released so they can update their app for it before it breaks anything.
The problem with revanced apps is there is no dev making these updates, at least not that I’m aware of.
Relay is continuing right? So the revanced patch will update alongside. Anyways if any such change happens I’ll just leave Reddit tbh.
Why are you revancing Relay if it works already? Relay does appear to be following the new rules and will work unaffected.

Reddit banned my account for “Abusing the report button”, and still won’t unban it. I still miss reddit because Lemmy doesn’t have enough interest specific forums.
I need to talk to someone about Mortal Kombat and Sonic!
They banned me for saying child molesters deserved to die. Meanwhile there’s all kinds of other threads with people saying the same shit about other way less bad demographics and nothing happens to them… Hmmmmmm.
My abuse of the report button, by the way, was because I kept reporting people for being outright malicious towards religious users. And since one’s belief system is protected class as far as discrimination goes, I thought I was doing the right thing. And when I tried to explain this, my appeal was ignored. I still miss it sometimes because there are a lot of groups that just haven’t been established on this platform yet. Sure we have a gaming channel, but we don’t have an in-depth discussion for Mortal Kombat or sonic the hedgehog. And with the new Mortal Kombat coming out in september, oh damn do I miss the old joint sometimes. Oh well, has Reddit gets worse and worse it’ll eventually be left in the dust. It’s not like I was banned for doing anything wrong. Just trying to uphold the terms of service when the website would not.
My appeal was ignored as well. I even gave them an example of a thread with dozens of comments that were just like mine but against a corporate executive asking what the difference was and they still just gave me the canned response. The only conclusion I can draw from that is the Reddit admins must want to create a safe space for child molesters specifically.
Shit, I didn’t even get the canned response, I was just ignored outright.
They were probably too busy looking for kids to diddle.
Personally I never used any 3rd party reddit clients because I avoid apps in general, and was really used to the old.reddit dating back to 2008 or so. However, I did give up on reddit finally based on the API issue, I had a successful API app based on another site years ago, and the way Splez acted was pretty much the same nonsense we were subjected to. We made something that the site members loved, and were able to eke out a decent living by developing and supporting it. We were always dealing with the site changing things, and the CEO had this attitude like we were interloper parasites making money from his property. We had the rug pulled out from under us multiple times with changes to the site, bugs, performance problems and unannounced feature cancellations. At the same time, their members told us our web app was the best, it enabled them to use the site and filled in huge gaps in the official offerings, and please don’t ever change it. So, to see Reddit act that way to API developers was unacceptable.
What happened to your app? (Or the site?)

And for a reasonable subscription price! It’s just a shame that we know it goes straight to reddit, so I’m not gonna do that.
The only reasonable subscription price to use a website you provide content for is free.
Who pays for the servers?
The users of reddit paid for the server costs many times over using the awards system. When it first started they kept saying how many years’ server costs they had in the bank, just from selling reddit gold.
I don’t mean reddit. You made a general statemet that you shouldn’t pay to access user generated content.
Even Lemmy has users contributing tens of thousands of dollars to pay for servers. Someone has to pay.
Well we’ve both given one example: passionate users who believe in and want to support the platform.
Another example would be the business itself through the data they exploit. In fact, if they’re collecting and exploiting user data, thus generating a profit from the user, then really they should be paying the user for the data.
You can’t sell a car without paying for the nuts and bolts, yet data companies don’t pay us for the materials we provide that are integral to their product.
There’s certainly some grey area with a free service that collects data for free. I’d still argue this is wrong, just because the value exchange is completely disproportionate. But when you’re paying for the product/service and they still collect your data (looking at you, Microsoft), then that’s just really scummy and wrong. With the reddit API charges, reddit is asking users to pay reddit so they can give reddit data that reddit can profit from. That’s fucked up.
That’s fair. With the reddit example, the data reddit collects is used for advertising. Because reddit accounts are anonymous, there’s not much to sell to third parties.
But with a third party reddit app, reddit can’t show ads. The data is pretty useless. I’m not convinced third party apps can be a meaningful part of the revenue stream.
Is there a free tier? I just check in every other week, and I’m surprised I can still use Relay without a subscription.
No free tier, but some third party apps with a serious effort at going subscription based have been granted more time by reddit (but were required to remove their ads, and more stuff I can’t remember (maybe no NSFW?).
I haven’t paid anything since my original Relay Pro fee several years ago and I can still browse porn on Reddit. I dunno what’s happening. I did see a pop-up screen a couple of days ago saying it would be changing to a subscription model, but so far it’s still working fine. I don’t think I’ll keep using it when it changes to subscription.
Infinity isn’t there, cuz it lives on on Lemmy.
Infinity for Reddit actually still works.
I know, but paid, so bad ig
Version 6.0.2 still works without paying. You can download it from F-Droid.
It still works?
I guess the app has API access but the pay functionality was not yet included in 6.0.2. It might get blocked at some point though.
Would assume so. The infinity devs are probably paying for the people using the app this way…
Infinity for lemmy clocking in!
god i love Infinity
it’s so lightweight but also feature packed, has such a user friendly interface and nice colours
Yep and it’s FOSS :-)
Currently using a nice nord theme with it!
We’re still on this?
The dev of Boost for Reddit says he’s working on a Lemmy version, but it is as of yet unreleased.

That’s why I’m running Lemmy on Sync for Lemmy. Absolutely beautiful.
Infinity, noooooo!!!
