I am more interested in why they are called “tank tops.” They don’t resembles any part of a tank, much less the top.

It’s because they resemble the top part of a full-body swimsuit that was called a “tank suit.” Here, “tank” refers to a tank of water used for swimming (i.e., what we usually call a pool).
I’ve tried using “a-shirt” in the US for the reasons mentioned but it seems like no one knows what I mean until I say “wife beater.”
They really fell out of popularity here. I’m the only one of my peers I know who wears them at all. They definitely imply trashy with some crowds.
