It was my bday last week and I was desperate for a good old fashioned lemon top. Alas, even though they sell those at basically every seaside town on the coast of NE England, we apparently picked the exception.
Got this lemon swirl as a backup and it was pretty good, ngl. It was no lemon top though, I’m still a bit salty a week later.
I’ve never heard of a lemon top (not a Northerner, maybe its regional?), but that looks lovely! Happy birthday :-)
It’s very regional. They’re from Redcar and you can only really get them on Teesside and the imeediate surrounding areas (I’m guessing the swirl pictured is in Saltburn).
When I first went to the seaside further North and discovered that Lemon Tops weren’t a thing I was devastated!
That was indeed Saltburn! But you get them all the way up to Shields and down to Scarborough I think (maybe even souther than Scarborough, that’s the furthest I’ve had one, maybe I need to go find out for science)
Edit: Also just been informed by a southern friend that they have them there but they’re called “lemon ices”. TIL.
Thanks, it was a good 'un.
Imagine your typical Mr. Whippy ice cream, usually in a waffle cone because why would you want any other kind of cone. But then a swirl of lemon sorbet on top of the ice cream. As opposed to this swirl thing that is just vanilla and lemon ice creams jumbled together.
When I was little it was a special treat to be allowed a lemon top that was “all lemon” but in hindsight that’s probably cheaper for the shop :D
We grownups deserve ice cream too. Hope you had a great day.
Thank you I very much did!
Adulthood is a myth 🍦😋
I grew up in a seaside town and I’ve never heard of a lemon top. Is it just a NE thing?
I’ve been informed by a southern friend that it sounds like what they call a “lemon ice”. It’s just ice cream with lemon sorbet on top, maybe you just call it something else?
Whereabouts in the UK? I’ll gather data and perhaps one day make a useless map.

Don’t want to derail this as definitely wrong thread - but can personally recommend Aberystwyth (where I went) and Bangor which both supposedly have good accountancy courses and are both good student towns (high concentration of students to locals during term time). Cardiff and Swansea are ranked a bit higher though, and are also good choices if he wants the busyness of a major city.
wow, yeah don’t know how I ended up in an ice cream thread. thanks
confession: i have 3 half gallons of my favorite flavors. eat 2 spoons and put it back. lasts about two months. repeat when it goes on sale again, or craving overcomes guilt. involves chocolate and brown butter/truffle. Happy Birthday!
2 spoons?! Your willpower is off the charts. I’d need a whole separate freezer for a two month supply, but then I am very very greedy.
when i first read it i thought he meant one in each hand and i was thinking thats taking a serious brain freeze risk
