On Tuesday, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a $233 billion budget proposal for New York state, including $2.4 billion to support asylum seekers in New York City. The New York Times’ article on this frames the portion of spending on migrants as the line item that “helps to push up the budget.” But this is misleading. The state’s spending on migrants is just 1% of the proposed budget. This will not stop anti-immigrant politicians from being mad about it, though.
A more costly element to Hochul’s budget proposal, among other things, is the fact that she is not implementing tax increases for millionaires and billionaires, effectively giving the middle finger to 80% of Democrats and 74% of New Yorkers who are in favor of such increases. Seems like taxing a few billionaires would solve a lot of issues.
