As you may know, Lemmy.world has decided to ban any communities that deal with the subjects of piracy. Considering that this sub might be considered piracy-adjacent, I’d like to make it clear that discussing the subject directly is not allowed, nor is requesting/offering Plex shares in posts or comments.

This is a community for discussing Plex products, serivices, add-ons, etc. and getting adivce and support or those apps/services. It’s not a place to discuss piracy. I understand this is a fine line to walk and requires a certain amount of compartmentalization in our discussions, but it’s what keeps our discussions from becoming legally problematic (depending on your jurisdiction) for our instance hosts and keeps our community federated with and visible to as many users as possible!

Thanks, Everyone!

– The Mod Team

EDIT: it should be noted that discussions that may involve piracy ARE PERMITTED (as it pertains to Plex and its add-ons) in our Matrix community chats (linked above and in the sidebar), as they’re not Lemmy-related and aren’t going to get this community in trouble here. However, all other rules still apply.

eh… lemmy.world is based in the US, so they’re liable for anything that gets federated there, as that stuff is not technically hosted on their servers. it’s not because they object to it, it’s just protecting themselves from dumb laws.

They are not. They are hosted by a German company, with servers in Finland. By a Dutch dude.

If it was any other regular website like reddit it would just get completely shut down. Like others have said, this is the strength of federation.

Literally they are not. DMCA Safe Harbor provisions specifically make them not liable for content posted by others until it is brought to their attention by a rights holder or some regulatory agency.

I can understand limiting direct links to torrent sites or copyrighted works, but this “discussing the subject directly is not allowed” is pretty overbearing. Whoever is labeling Plex as “piracy-adjacent” shows a generally uninformed opinion on Plex.

uninformed opinion or not, I’d like to play it safe and ensure this community stays open and viewable to as many people as possible. I know the Plex subreddit ran into issues in the past, and I’d like to avoid them.

please follow the rules and keep in mind that this sub is of discussing Plex and its addons, not piracy. there are other places for that.

I find it telling that you ban things that might mean less money in millionaires pockets but still allow Ukrainian war footage of real people dying. Those are brothers, sons, mothers, and daughters dying but you may have prevented a dozen people from downloading “across the spider-verse”.

I think it’s pretty disturbing that you think that there’s anything in common with keeping the conversations in this community relevant and the atrocities committed in Ukraine by the illegal invasion by Russia.

worse, that you’d try to blame me or any of it. but don’t worry, you don’t have to worry about the rules here ever again.

you’re perfectly free to discuss that elsewhere.

in this community we discuss how to install, configure, troubleshoot, etc. Plex and plex add-ons as well as features and so on.

Where or how you acquire your content (with the exception of Plex streaming content) is irrelevant and not an appropriate subject for conversation here if it involves piracy.

      Sorry.

free speech is never guaranteed on private platforms, and it’s explicitly not permitted in moderated communities. you even had to agree to a code of conduct which limits your speech when you created you account. if you came here expecting that, you came to the wrong place.

your participation here is a privilege conditional on your adherence to a social contract which, if you violate, will be revoked. keep that in mind. your freedom is to follow the rules or exercise your freedoms elsewhere.
