I’m down for more chat rooms, especially the alive and kicking rooms.
Which rooms y’all in, and roughly how busy are they?
so… is matrix like discord, but a decentralized version of that?
Yes.
Matrix (the most popular app is Element) is to discord What Lemmy is to reddit.
cool. all set up!
Not really, it’s more like Whatsapp. I don’t know why people keep comparing it to Discord.
Because its default interface (Element, by Matrix developers) looks like Discord
Still a ways off, to be frank. Matrix is first and foremost a room-based chat platform, like Whatsapp, Signal or Telegram. It gives you the option to organize channels into spaces and subspaces, but they still lack the cohesion and first-party-ness of Discord servers.
In Element (an app that uses Matrix protocol) you can basically organize yourself as in Discord. Rooms/Servers with subchannels that you can invite people to and distribute admin/mod rights.
How do you do that? I have Element but all the chats I’ve joined are organised as single channels.
I guess it is up to the person creating the channel. There are “Spaces” and “Rooms”. Spaces are the equivalent of discord “servers”. But rooms can also be created outside of a space, making them similar to a group in Telegram/WhatsApp.
I’m in LibreMemes, a place for r/linuxmemes refugees where any tech memes are welcome. https://matrix.to/#/#librememes:nitro.chat
Nice i’ll promote it a little in community promo
Is it possible to subscribe to a Matrix room from Lemmy without having to have an account on a Matrix instance?
no, that’s not possible. Matrix uses it’s own protocol.
Sadly no. Matrix is not a part of the fediverse.
Been using Matrix with a few people for a few months now and am quite happy. I made the move after Signal decided to kill off support for SMS.
- I am tired of first parties dictating the usage of their platforms. I’d like a bit of ownership.
- Signal’s seamless bridging between sms and encrypted messaging was the entire value add.
TIL signal killed off their sms support
Which was an Android-only feature already. It sucks that they’ve removed it, the long-hold action on the send button is now used for the scheduled send feature.
Not really. I’m more of a XMPP user. And I think Lemmy could have a separate field for XMPP also instead of only having one for Matrix. XMPP’s good
It was hard enough to get my family to switch from WhatsApp to signal. I think matrix would be a step too far. I do have account myself but haven’t seen too many active rooms.
I’ve been using matrix for a while, I just use it to talk to my friends. I prefer using irc when I need to talk to strangers.
